This is the mighty Fast Carrier Task Force.Originally posted by OldBird69:Are these pics from the allied fleet off of Japan around mid-1945, near the end of WWII?
I heard there were nearly 1000 (incl. >50 aircraft carriers) ships in this humongous fleet.
I found more pics at:

Fair comment - the Yanks have a history of doing that. They'd like to think that they won WW1 singlehandedly as well, but the facts bear out that they waited until the sinking of the Lusitania before getting their butts off their hands.Originally posted by red_amoeba:i think its the case of us handing over our defense responsibility to someone who scoot first when things spell trouble for them and then return to try to claim victory after we have suffered 3 yrs +.
I think history agrees that England greatly underestimated the Germans & Japs. And the Americans, they procastinated until their Pearl Harbor get bombed. If they have done something earlier, things might be different. Then again, why shld they, the happenings in Europe & Asia prior to Pearl Harbor has got nothing to do with them.
Not trying to split hairs but there's a history podcast I listen to, and the the guy always emphasizes that it is not the Lusitania incident that dragged the US into WWI. Actually, its the German practice of unrestricted submarine warfare that finally did the trick.Originally posted by Gedanken:Fair comment - the Yanks have a history of doing that. you refering to the pics i posted?Originally posted by beavan:they were the best only at the beginning. then came midway. and it was the end.
All I'll say is this: do some research into the size of the hole in the Lusitania's hull - that ought to lead you to the rest of the story.Originally posted by fallin:Not trying to split hairs but there's a history podcast I listen to, and the the guy always emphasizes that it is not the Lusitania incident that dragged the US into WWI. Think of it as somebody accidentally shooting your kids as compared to somebody declaring that they're going to shoot your children no matter what they do.
Without doubt, Lordz, but why do Midway and Iwo Jima overshadow the Kokoda Trail, Force 136 and the Chindits?Originally posted by LazerLordz:Sometimes, we've got to put aside political inclinations and thank those who have spilled their blood and consequently ensured our freedom from tyranny.

What discussion might that be? Your first post was a shot of a couple of carriers and a "thank you" message.Originally posted by Marco_Simone:please limit discussion to the fast carrier task force, thanks.
Are you refering the exploding ammunition on the Lusitania? If yes, I've heard of it.Originally posted by Gedanken:All I'll say is this: do some research into the size of the hole in the Lusitania's hull - that ought to lead you to the rest of the story.
The Yanks were playing this, "We wanna play but we don't want to get our hands dirty" game. I've got a hard time swallowing the excuse of unrestricted German submarine warfare because if the Yanks were using passenger liners to transport war materials, it doesn't count as unrestricted warefare - these liners were legitimate targets by virtue of their cargo. The question is why did the Yanks wait so long to stop sneaking around?Originally posted by fallin:Are you refering the exploding ammunition on the Lusitania? If yes, I've heard of it.

U forget US has philippines in Asia. A fight in asia that is threatening American interest! After axed of Indo-china ,USA put embargo on Jap! A fight between USA and Jap over SEA is unavoidable.Originally posted by Arapahoe:They did not delay joining the war. They were not going to fight at all. Even at the eve they were still negociating with Japan. Until Pearl Harbour attack.
The US would have view the fight was a Europrean and Asia imperial expansion war, why would they risk their son and daugther to fight with imperialist. They were ocean apart. News about the war were coming thru telex into US. not by picture, How would farmers in Nebraska or Kansa would know why the rest of the world was at war? To them it was events that was far far away got nothing to do with them. In the early 40 economy was picking up life was getting better good from depression.
Once you use today standard to judge the decision of the past you have to understand what was the perception back in the 40's.
