The 'Han Ma' as the ma lao soldiers called them are very powerful vehicles! We use one to tow out a 10 tonne truck stuck in mud!Originally posted by laurence82:Maybe we lacking on new LT?
I would love the likes of those Humveers, firing ATGMs or SAMs
What role can the LT fill that our existing anf new assets cannot fill?Originally posted by LazerLordz:Either an indig LT or CV90. I still feel strongly about that one.
Tempest could have been turfed out a while back. The usual rumours about a Merk 3 always come around.
Amphibious tanks do not have a reputation for good armor. Tanks like the PT-76 were largely infantry support vehicles.Originally posted by chino65:What role can the LT fill that our existing anf new assets cannot fill?
Or should the LT be amphibious? - there being so many rivers in the region including a certain Straits?
No they don't. However, an amphibious vehicle is far lighter than a light tank. The PT-76 for example is 14 tonnes. It still is in service with the Russian army.Originally posted by chino65:Most LT do not have good armour. Or do they?
Pretty much what I guessed. But before MSD (MINDEF Security Department or something) come and drag you away never to be heard from again... where did you hear this?Originally posted by bigballs11:According to my insider spy network
The so call tracked Light Tank (SM1 replacement) has long been scapped. Too bad for those LT fans.
In preference, the new doctrine is closely based on experience drawn by recent US conflict and new thinking in networkcentric 3G army.
The traditional role of an armour core will rest on the recently acquired Leopard 2A4. A brigade will be sufficient as the role of heavy armour take a back seat in network centric 3G army.
The role of SM1 will be replaced by a variant of 8x8 armour vehicle similar to US stryker concept. Likely a new RDP brigade/division will show case the formation of this new light armour, highly transportable/manuverable network centric strike force.
The current combined division will stuck with their current tracked Bionix/Ultra mixed organic brigade.
A sad piece of news indeed.Originally posted by SpecOps87:Goodness...Stryker platform. I don't know why...but why is it that our good ol' SAF is mimicking the US Armed Forces?
