The French, for some obscene reason, are the unluckiest bunch on any battlefield. Thoroughly screwed in WW1 and WW2, and lost plenty of battles in history. The best and furtherest they have gone is under Napoleon, only to have been defeated by the British on the seas, and finally on the land. To then add insult to injury, the Brits have a statue of Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson right at the Eurotrain station at Trafalgar square.
Surrender monkeys or not, they certainly lose more than half the time. -

Besides military matters, there is a long history of dislike between the English-speaking whites and the French.
It is true, however, that the french had been losers at nearly every fight since WW1. But to be fair to them, they made a movie called Dien Bien Phu that told it like it is, although as European movies go - in a bit artsy manner - about how they lost to a bunch of peasants.
OK, a VERY BIG BUNCH of peasants. Peasants who hauled field guns and ammo up a mountain to hammer the French into submission. -
Aside from the closing decades of the Hundred Years War, the days of the Great Conde, Turenne and Saxe, and the Napoleonic era not much of French victories to talk about.
But I shan't talk bad of the french, course I'm not qualified. The Brits and Americans have at least fought major wars before so...
Let's just hope should our time come, we perform up to expectations. Otherwise we'll end up as bigger jokes. -

A guy at the swimming pool feels the call of nature and decided he didn't want to walk all the way to the toilet. So he pees into the water.
A Lifeguard jumps up and shouts "HEY, YOU CAN'T PEE IN THE POOL!!!!"

So, everybody makes jokes about other people, French included. And other people make fun of Singaporeans. It's all fair trade. -
I'll tell you why I think the French are funny and do not deserve pity cos...
...after being thoroughly humiliated in both world wars, they had the cheek to stroll back into her colonies in Asia and Africa and expect to lord it over the coloured folks again.
So obviously the Viets said "fcuk that" and started the thirty year war. They would have fought for another 30 and another 30.
One problem is that Westerners keep forgetting that the days of occupying another country with whatever pretext are over, PERIOD.
The proliferation of small arms, the ease of supplying a guerilla army with means to wage war, means that eventually, all occupation would fail. The indeginous people have nowhere else to go so they can only fight. The occupying armies will always have an easy option - LEAVE. And eventually, most do. -
No wonder the French Exchange student says its crazy to fight wars...their culture...gee

He does have a good point though. War leads to the lost of resources, manpower as well as monies. Better to jaw jaw then war war.

I do agree that most wars are a bloody waste of time, lives etc... But WW2 is not such a war. The Germans invaded and occupied France.
Granted the French did fight, but capitulated rather quickly and more shamefully, many of them became Hitler's puppet in forming the Vichy French government. There were even Vichy French soldiers who (technically) fought on the Axis side though I don't know to what extent they saw combat.
Though, to salvage some of France's honour, many who did escape fought bravely on the Allied side as the Free French Forces. -
Come to think of it...the French are known for making gourmet food,wine and be romantics...nothing else.

Chamberlain is most famous for the words, "We have peace in our time!"
But true, there are some fights that cannot be avoided and if so then no choice but to fight.
I tried looking up the current French Army ORBAT - I'm confused as hell. They Marine Troupes which I think is for expeditionary purposes but the navy has got their own Fusiliers de Marine which are more akin to naval infantry, then they have the more common infantry corps, artillery, armor and the rather archaic cavalry corps. Of course there's the FFL. And then almost half the army strength is actually gerdarmeries which are actually normal police and military police!

Cant really blame the French.During the 2 world wars they were taking on the single most powerful land army of it's time. The Prussian/German Army. No 1 country during those times could have won. Well maybe the Soviets might have a chance, but seriously on their own it would have been a long hard one and then it's not certain the Germans would have lost.
Going backwards from then those 2 wars.
Franco-Prussian war.
France lost the the world's best army armed with the worlds best arty guns. Incidently the Prussians had the best and quite possibly the ONLY Army General staff.
Napoleon Wars.
Combined Russian,English,German force was needed.
Even then it was a close one.
30 year war
France won.well kinda had her way anyway.
She won many a war during the time from after the 100 year war.

The british are lucky to count themselves having a english channel seperate them from Mainland Europe.
If substitute the position of French and British in WWII. British will have the same fate as French. German is too strong in Land War and their new doctrine and strategy is superior in the initial of the WWII. To blame the French as lousy is absurd. -

France especially, as it was their turf. All their men and equipment were there.
And the French were a very big and substantial army. That they were not as powerful as the Germans were already a sign of their weakness of will. Germany was quite broke after WW1, was under arms buildup control and yet they were able to surpass the French in armaments.
And they are next door to each other. How can the French not know of a arms buildup? If they did not bother to check on Germany, it is again a weakness of their part.
Take for example us in SE Asia. Singapore would never let Malaysia or Indonesia have a more powerful military force than us. To let them overtake us will be a sign of complacency or weakness of will.
It was a published fact that France had more and better tanks than Germany at the start of the war. They just didn't know how to emply them.
The British had an Expeditionary Force on Mainland Europe. But you're right, the Brits also made the same mistakes and were as weak as the French and luckily they had the Channel to escape back to.
But the quality of the Brit soldier had never been in doubt. These people had fought on nearly everyone in every part of the world since history and are known to be mostly good fighters. -
I think French army employs prostitutes to serve their troops?

the french stand no chance against nazi germany at the time due to hitler had his old generals who knew how to lead the blitzkrieg after tat most died so hitler had new generals who knew sht about blitzkrieg resulting in stupid plans which made them lose.... back to the french they are like stuck to europe big long border to defend and thier tanks were like wah "so powerful"

The thing is...its with the attitudes of the youths in France man. No sense of national pride, nor patriotism. Granted that they are not some communist fanatical country, but really, I spoke to the French exchange student whom introduced me to another 2 of his peers here,their sentiments are exactly that of their friend. I did ask them about the FFL and they went "Fark...those guys are crazy man. They can't fit into our society" which I'm quite stunned to hear. I won't say that of someone whom doesn't belong to my country but is willing to put his/her life on the line for me just to let me sleep peacefully at night man.
