By 1960 the RAF was involved in drawing up nuclear targeting plans for SEATO and had made plans to move 48 Red Beard tactical nuclear weapons to Tengah in 1962. Three squadrons of V-bombers would be based there, capable of dropping Red Beard weapons from high altitude, together with one squadron of smaller Canberra aircraft, which would use a low-altitude bombing system, or "toss bombing" tactic.
British Vulcan (V-bombers) were never sent permanently to the Far East. Instead, four to eight were dispatched to Tengah, Singapore and RAAF Butterworth, Malaya between 1963 and 1966 during the "confrontation" between Malaysia and Indonesia. These aircraft would have been tasked, if the confrontation had escalated, with conventional bombing of Indonesian airfields to begin with. Nuclear bombs would only be used as a last resort. In addition, the Canberra squadron at Tengah began low-altitude nuclear bombing exercises at the end of 1963. This squadron remained in the Far East until 1970, although it is not clear that it necessarily remained nuclear equipped. The British government decided that any further escalation by the Indonesians would result in British Vulcan bombers conducting raids against Indonesian targets using RAAF Base Darwin as their operating base, but there is no evidence that any of the 48 nuclear bombs were moved to Darwin. During confrontation only one raid by two Victor-bombers took place against Indonesia........

In the 1960, Singapore was one of the states that made up the Federation of Malaysia. Indonesia's confrontation was against Malaysia, as a whole. Therefore at that time, Singapore does not have any say in defence. At that time, Singapore could not even get permission from KL to develop Jurong. Much less about nuking the Indons.

The Indons think they are very powerful. They don't even know their planes got no missiles...... or that their East German ships are scrap metal sold to them cheap.
Now they talk big as if we need their training areas.........we are just trying to be nice, to build bridges........
Maybe our govt should just give up on them, and let them fry in their own juice.

Government Prepares to Purchase Missiles for Sukhoi Fighters

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian department of defense is currently processing the purchase of weapons for four Sukhoi fighter planes made by Russia.
These planes, owned by the Air Force, are not yet in service.
Rear Admiral Yuwendi, director general for defense planning at the department of defense, said on Wednesday (14/12) that the weapons to be purchased from Russia included cruise missiles, medium-range missiles and short-range missiles.
“We hope that by the middle of 2006, these weapons for the Sukhoi planes will all have arrived,” stated Yuwendi.
He admitted that he did not remember the price of these weapons.
“The point is that by the middle of next year, our Sukhoi fighters will be real fighter planes,” said Yuwendi. -

The Indonesians and the Malaysians - trust them only as far as you can throw them.
In fact, the Malaysians are sometimes more straightforward than the cunning and devious "Java Devils". That's what my grandparents and parents called them in the old days.
I know we cannot afford to offend them but must we really perpetuate this myth of "friendship" with the Indonesians?
I'm sure the PAP government is not stupid and they must be very aware of this underlying hostility (even among ordinary Indonesians) towards Singaporeans. So what games are they playing with all these pretend treaties and sharing military tech etc....?
How can you sign any meaningful treaties with a people who change their minds as and when they see fit? -
What i don't understand was why do we even willing to provide techincal help on military subject to the Indo? Have we consider Australian concern?

The history of South East Asia reveals a series of take overs.
Time frame then was in the space of a few hundred years, before there there was regime change.
Indian, Siamese, Achenese, Bugis, Javanese.
The Dutch, British, why even the Japanese have fought for this island.
Not to forge "friendship" ties with our neighbours is being shortsighted.
Yes, there is no guarantee of peace, but these friendship ties help to dissipate hostilities.
There are a number of occasions where tensions between Malaysia and Singapore could have escalated to hostilities. Instead they were just hickups. We do not want to be like India and Pakistan, with our neighbours.
Therefore these "friendship" treaties are really the first line of defence. -
Like I say, we can't afford to offend the Indonesians.
And we all know our "friendship" with the Indonesians really is to placate them so they will leave us Singaporeans alone to get fat and rich.
But they are a cunning lot and the "by-the-book" bunch at PAP trying to match wits with these mercurial foxes somehow isn't a very reassuring picture. Especially once LKY is totally out of the picture leaving behind a bunch of brain-dead bureaucrats.
The type of "friendship" Singapore has with our neighbours usually involve the supply of arms. Indonesia and Burma had so far been the biggest receipients of SG arms. I have quite a few pictures of Indo troops with U100's for example.
But small arms is nothing.
This military high-tech co-operation, this is what I am concerned about.
At least the Malaysian, like I said, are very straightforward. They continue to consider us a potential military threat, PERIOD. Therefore, they don't buy one single item of military supply from Singapore, as far as I know.
The Indos on the other hand, are sometimes friends, sometimes foes. You don't know whether to shake hands or shoot them. -
SG may have qualitative military edge, but Indon has over 200 million people, over 3/4 muslims. Current world situation makes any conflict very likely for some on the other side to escalate and use the word 'jihad' on us. When that happens, military superiority may be useless (look at US in Iraq now).
Some regional observers say the Indon military is S'pore's best hope of forming a longer-lasting peaceful co-existence with Indon, since most of the political parties don't agree with us or don't last. My guess is: SG's logic is since the current President is ex-military, they should forge even stronger closer military relationship w/ Indon, maybe try to keep him there as long as possible. For all the bad things Suharto (he's ex-military too) did, we had our best times with Indo when he was in power. -

so .... it is in our interest to keep their planes flying and their men equipped .... nevermind the inconvenient bits about tortures of civilians in PNG, aceh etc ....
infact, I wouldn't be surprised if we're supplying F-16 and charlie parts to indonesia with a quiet nod and wink from washington too, who cannot be seen to be supplying the indonesians directly .... if indonesia fragments, and the nutters from the middle east moves in, then we'll have a real nightmare scenario .... -
I think I am more afraid of an Indonesia in a state of chaos, i.e. fragmented and fighting each other, than a united Indonesia. We will be screwed if this happens.

I understand the notion of holding Indo together as a friendly state. I just think there are better way to positively influence the region rather than arming.
In both MY and Indo we see that relationship between Sing and these 2 countries changes according to political leadership changed, if the chemistry between leaders are good, life seemed peaceful. Under current will be there as they view historical fact that Singapore belong to them in different historical period.
If any unforseen event happened, our closes friend “geographic terms” would be Australia. The Australian have help Indo in humanitarian aspect but i don't know of any military technical help to the indo. I think their viewed is simple and realistic that they have a huge coast line to defend and it is facing indo. So I think Aus does not feel secure to help Indo military as yet.
I think we also have to understand that If something happen between Indo n aussie, and the Aussie are busy defending the coastline than it would impact its resources for oversea deployment. We might not want that to happen when the time come. -

It's better that we face a fragmented Indonesia.....if Batam would sell us sand. we buy from Medan or Aceh.
Then we sell weapons to Irian Jaya to fight with Java.
and sell ammo to Java to fight Ambon.........and if they got no money, I say then can pay with selling us their Natunas or better still, Kalimantan

the things with politics within MY and Indo. after a while some political group will dig out some siht and discredit her.
But you know the positive outcome of the sand ban is that it force us to look at alternative, long term dependence on MY and Indo means there is always a leash on us. -
Well, I don't mind a fragmented Indonesia IF its only the rich folks that decide to come and stay in Singapore. But I think, with such a fragmentation, we'd see more refugee problems than rich migrants.

how to retaliate? Fight with what would hurt them economically.......the price of rice, cooking oil, and commodities. We should manipulate the market to push all these prices up, so that the Indonesian people would be discontented with their govt, and rise up in arms..................hopefully they would fragment, and we support those who would be friendly to us towards independance from the Javanese ..........

And like someone - moca? - pointed out on this forum... the tsunami rescue effort demonstrated how quickly and smoothly SAF can mobilise a major overseas military operations within 48 hours.
Stupidly, we did help the Indonesians duing the flood recently.
That our military can cream these backwards states is quite certain. SO I don't see why PAP continue to kowtow to their 2-bit aunty politicians, half-wit leaders etc...
