Captain promotion to Major (how many year will it take)?

For peacekeeping deployment at the junior staff officer level, it's not whether you are a farmer or scholar that counts. In some cases, if you are combat support, you might get more opportunities.

Many years ago there was a Natioanl Incident (of course the public didnt know about this)and the company on Standby was activated.The OC and the 3 PC reported to Central Police Station for a briefing.The Superintendant greeted one of the PC (Captain)who was a Scholar and said 'Are you the OC?' and he said 'No Sir' the senior police officer then greeted the other two Captains (also SAF scholars) and they both answered 'No Sir' at this point the frustrated police officer said 'You mean the fcuking 2 bar is the OC?'.This is a true story.Today,one is a reitred full colonel,one is a full colonel and one a BG.As for the farking 2 bar,I think the highest rank he ever got to was Major.Originally posted by moca:For any "tann jia peng" career officer, the minimum rank is Cpt. In my reservist unit, because of the introduction of the (then) new 1st Sgt rank - all the NCOs were promoted en masse to 1st sergeants.
Most of the officers got 3 bars en masse also. So in my company there was only one Lt who was a recent replacement for a PC promoted to 2IC. Every other officer were Cpts. -

Promotion is near guaranteed so long as they have been meeting the grading criteria very year. Someone was mentioning to me that they tightened things up as there were too many officers last year or the year before. In my time in some place no one needs to know, the youngest officer who got a LTC rank was a 28 year old bugger. SAFOS too. Big surprise however. These guys start their true career in the SAF as CPT already. No kidding. -

Talk about prommotion, I was one of the few Lcpl promoted to Cpl without having gone through (then) SAFINCOS.

Well, technically, after undergrad, they are sent to some foreign military institute for a year. (or at least from what I have seen. I might have missed out one or two exceptions or more.). They are then given their 3rd bar upon return. 2 estabs well, typically 1.5-2years each? One on desk, one on the field? Might be shorter though. -

I graduated with a 2Upper BEng.
I'll convert to Engineering Officer after MIDS course. -

what i heard is(but not confirmed to be true), those holding good honours degree will be promoted after 1 yr to cpt...this seems to indicate that educational qualifications will determine ur promotion. so if someone sign on with master's degree, does that mean he will rise to major faster? -

If you sign on during NS, and then go study your Uni degree, you will come back as a LTA and be promoted to a Cpt almost immediately.
So being a Cpt is easy peasy. -

NLD was shifted elsewhere some time ago. Are u really a NEO? if u are, then
are u wif PS or CS?
Anyway, degree holders (ie. be it a PASS degree or honours degree) got promoted immediately to LTA after their studies if they haven oreadi been so.
The emplacement to CPT takes 2.5 yrs or 1 yr after their studies, whichever is later, for COMBAT officers. For engineering officers, they are promoted to CPT after they have fulfilled the 2.5yrs requirement. The 2.5 yrs starts from the date u enlist till the date u disrupt for studies, plus the length of time u come back from ur studies to fulfill the requirement. All ur Vacation attachment (VA) during ur studies are NOT included. Hope this helps.

Why 1st SGT can promoted to officer straight away without taking any OCS conversion course, I know u got a degree, but u also need to go through the OCS course mah, at least a modified OCS course

The system largely works for Warrant Officers, unless the fellow is about the be promoted to a 2nd Warrant.
But mind you, I think he's taking a pay cut I think. -
