The new Add-on Armour (AOA) module, officially commissioned on 25 October, adds a whole new level of protection to our soldiers involved in Operations Other than War (OOTW).
The AOA is attached to Our ArmyÂ’s Five Ton trucks, protecting passengers from small-arms fire. This increased armour protection comes with no detriment to the mobility of the trucks or the driversÂ’ field of view.It was the first time an Army team took the lead as the principal project driver in developing an AOA solution for wheeled vehicles.
A member of the project team, CPT Jason Chia said, “It was the first time we spearheaded a project like this. We learnt along the way and worked with ballistics materials companies overseas to use the suitable materials and best designs.”
The AOA features plenty of technologies and designs that protect our soldiers and vehicles from small-arms fire. Ballistics material (ArmourGuard Steel, Ballistics Glass, Aztik Panel) covering the front cab and rear cargo stop small-arms fire from penetrating and harming our soldiers. Tankskin, a material sprayed onto the fuel tank of the vehicle, instantly seals any leakage if it occurs. Tyron Runflat, a mechanism allowing the vehicle to continue driving with flat tyres, is also installed on all the four tyres.
The rear cargo is also designed with gunports and glass viewers for the soldiers to fire at any threats approaching the vehicle. There are three variants of AOA-equipped Man Five Ton, each having unique attributes suitable for various situations.
The main differences include the seating layout and inclusion of Anti-Personnel Mine Shield. For example, Variant One has a central seating arrangement, which allows for quicker gunport response while Variant Three has a more versatile side seating layout that facilitates cargo transport.
Variant Two is the same as the first with the addition of Anti-Personnel Mine Shield.The Guards Formation will be equipped with ten of these armoured five-tonner trucks from December onwards.
Chief Guards Officer, BG Goh Kee Nguan (right) commented, ”This will be useful for our troops when they are deployed for OOTW. The lives of our soldiers are very important and we want to make sure they are adequately protected when performing their mission.
These add-on armour makes sure that in the event our guys get fired at, there is adequate protection for them against small-arms fire.”

Having said that.. This is not good enough for PKO. -
Note that the top is open except for the tarpaulin. One can easily lob a grenade onto the cape or set it on fire. This vehicle is probably more useful for Internal Security work or urban policing.

SAF would be bullSh!tting if they said the AOA made the tonner RPG proof. Friends from Armor, don't fret. You won't have to chiong the front lines with this. -
Are these vehicles going to serve in Afghanistan, bcos they said OOTW? Are they going to implement this vehicle to the company that are supposed to escort the DSSB during logistics ops? I do hope they are still looking into the Terrex for this purpose. Anyway a air-burst round could easily kill the entire crew behind.

i believe they said its going to serve in low threat environment, or on humanitarian mission
surely not like those in Iraq or Afghanistan bah, where every corner somebody lurks with an RPG -
this stuff will only appear in newspaper..
in reality, saf will still b using the unarmoured 5 tonner..
its for show in another words..

No lar this armoured 5-ton is going to do that exact some thing as the current 5-ton. Carry stuff and troops in low -level/safe areas.
Basically it's just a 5-ton with 7.62 protection. That's better than nothing the stupid piece of canvas now.
It's going to be a modular design IE only war time then they set up the 5-ton to look like this.
Death traps...all lorries are deathtrap. If you want armour for fighting you take an afv. This is not going to be a fighting vehicle of any sort. This vehicle is going to ensure you have ammo,food,water and fuel. Maybe, even fresh men for replacements. -
Don't listen to all of them above, its to replace all our current bx and m113s.

Mine protection and some armour plating is better than canvas.
If it sin't RPG proof, that's because it is not a assault vehicle, I think. It is just to give soldiers some measure of protection on the way to the battle zone. Or maybe used as a patrol vehicle in low-intensity internal conflicts. -

Rather 10-20tonne, after you add that much protection, new engine, and what not.
Truth to tell, this day and age, you only stuff infantry into IFVs, not tonners. These are meant for logistics. -

Also, driving all the way to the fight in AFV convoys may not always be best or evenpossible due to many reasons including terrain, enemy activity, etc etc. The US is roadbound which makes them juicy targets.
As SAF infantry, we have ABSOLUTELY NO armoured assets. They have to be loaned to the battalion depending on mission and they are not always available.
But trucks, we have integral to the battalion.
In a typical battalion/company mission, we get dropped off by trucks and other softskin transports in a safe area first. Then the trucks bugger off.
We harbour in that area, usually a patch of forest etc, until at night when we trek through the forest to the target. The path would be marked by scouts during the day time with luminous markers.
A company of infantrymen moving in the darkness in the forest is no stealth, mind you. We sound like a herd of wild elephants.
