the B52 is the old workhorse! its cheap and nbeen paid for and has a hell of a loadout. YOu can see on the picture it has those new low radar cross section cruise missile.
Seeing one B52 is one thing ! but seeing rows and rows of operational B52 in Barkesdale! makes you feel so small!

apparently i watched Discovery and they said that the B-52 might be in operation right up till at least 2020 or was it 2040.

The B-52's continue existence is probably one of the more remarkable bits of aerospace engineering of the century.
They are rebuilt every now and then apparently. -
That the Americans continue to use the B-52 to bomb insurgents is itself a "miracle".
It was shown in Vietnam to be a stupid waste of money not to mention wanton and useless destruction to use B-52 in guerilla wars.
Yet, they persist till this day, e.g. Afghanistan.
Use the mallet to kill ants. -

haha they really should restart production of this plane......i mean really man the last plane was build in the early 60's if i recall correctly.
Entire generations and their sons and grandsons have flown this old workhorse! -

at that time the north vietnam air defence were the biggest and the most heavily defended airspace in the world(other that Russia) , it have the thickest consentration of air defence weapon consisted of multilayered missile and AA gun in terms of per square meters. By saying the B52 were downed by guerilla is like a sick joke.Yet, they persist till this day, e.g. Afghanistan.

The B-52 being used in Vietnam was the first sign that the US had lost the plot on that one. If anyone was scared during the Vietnam War it certainly wasn't the VC or NVA if you get my drift...
The people who really knew how to fight insurgents were the Brits and the Aussies. And they never use strategic bombers.
Not only are the B-52 expensive to maintain, each flight costs a lot of money: the big bomb load, the fuel, wear and tear on a 60-yr old plane... all these costs money. But the return seem to be quite low so far. -

dude ... during the vietnam the archlight mission were so effective the nva have to dig hills to hide their heavy artillery....
good weapon system are expensive..you want cheap one get a kite and hang some grenade with it. -

The defense of Khe Sanh in 1968 developed into the largest and most significant air campaigns to date in Southeast Asia. Around-the-clock strikes were made against enemy forces besieging the base, with SAC bombers accounting for approximately 60,000 tons of bombs being dropped. With fighter-bomber support being limited by the monsoon season, the B-52 was particularly valuable in countering enemy aggression. In conducting this bombing, the B-52 crews relied upon ground-based radar to direct them to their targets, where they destroyed tons of North Vietnamese supplies. These air attacks helped break the siege on Khe Sanh and force the North Vietnamese to withdraw.

The next alternative is a variant of the F-22 which Lockheed Martin proposed but whether that will see the light of day remains to be seen. The military budget in the US is under incredible strain right now. -
