Northrop Grumman Wins Radar Contract for RSAF C-130s

BALTIMORE, May 9, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been awarded a contract to integrate its AN/APN-241 low-power color weather and navigation radar on the C-130 aircraft for the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF).

The contract was awarded by Singapore Technologies Aerospace Ltd (ST Aerospace), the prime contractor for the RSAF's C-130 modernization program.

"This contract provides the RSAF with a reliable and maintainable radar system that has the performance needed to support their mission," said Andrew Wesolowski, director of Northrop Grumman's combat air delivery systems programs.

The AN/APN-241 radar offers high-resolution ground mapping that enables accurate low-level navigation and precision aerial drops, predictive windshear detection in all weather conditions, and situational awareness for all-weather formation flying.

As part of the contract, Northrop Grumman will manufacture and provide integration for the radars and spare parts. Northrop Grumman will also provide training and support of ST Aerospace ground and flight tests.

Radar production work will be performed at the company's engineering and manufacturing facilities in Norwalk, Conn., and Baltimore.

How many C-130's do we have? Something like 5 is it?

If only 5, how to threaten neighbouring countries? How to project power?

i think only one sqn.

AFAIK, we dont really use C-130 for power projection. We use chinooks.

Our C-130 is for parachuists, supplies, emergency evacuation. I think that's it.

SAF is not intended for power projection, but an effective deterrence force..

During wartime, LSTs and frigates plus Chinooks, Pumas, Apaches , plus SOF will be used to invade occupied isles that is rightfully belonging to Singapore..

Our C-130 fleet numbers 10 aircraft, comprising 4 C-130B converted to KC-130 aerial refuelling configuration and 6 C-130H transports.

Personally I would like all these to be retired, given that they were built the late 1970s(KC-130B) and mid 1980s(C-130H), being replaced with an equal number of C-130J models.

*I know that subsequent posts will state things like cost effectiveness and the like being preferable but it would be wiser to replace them now than to soldier on with airframes nearing 30 years of age soon. Surely 10 C-130Js will not take much of a cut on our budget.

recently there are just too many big money purchases for our budget to keep up with.
