Now imagine that this gun could fire .308 caliber and .50 caliber metal projectiles accurately at up to 8,000 fps (feet-per-second), featured an infinitely variable/programmable cyclic rate-of-fire (as high as 120,000 rounds-per-minute), and were capable of laying down a 360-degree field of fire.

No,it spins metal balls at insanely high RPMs within the weapon and then eject them towards the target.
But hmm... I suppose the weapon has to be constantly on before it is used... for it takes time to spin the balls up to speed (just like how there is a slight lag before electrically powered miniguns are fired)... so it's application for individual infantry weapons may still be some ways off. But it will work good on the mounted role though.
The only sound would be a lot less then normal firearms, and the only sound from the projectiles will be from the sonic boom as they break the sound barrier. -
