The Dental Consultant at the Armed Forces Dentistry Centre (PGAT) Dr Roshidah Ishak has become the first woman to hold the rank of Brigadier-General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).
Dr Roshidah, from the Army's Royal Medical Corps (RMC), was also the first woman to hold rank of Colonel in 1988.
She received the Brigadier-General's star from Army Chief, General Datuk Muhammad Ismail Jamaluddin at a special function for the donning of the ranks for senior army officers at Wisma Pertahanan, here Monday.
"I feel proud and touched by the conferment of the rank and I hope this conferment can encourage other women members (in the ATM) to be more inspired in carrying out their duties," she said.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Ismail said 62 senior army officers had been promoted since early this year and today was the fourth ceremony for the donning of their new ranks.
"Today is a historic day for the army when a woman receives the rank of Brigadier-General for the first time," he said in his speech at the ceremony.
He also hoped there would be more women promoted to senior ranks in the military in future.
Besides Dr Roshidah, another woman officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Norhuda Ahmad, who is the Director of Research and Publications at the South-East Asian Regional Centre, the army's Royal Intelligence Corps (KRD), was also promoted to Acting Colonel.
Thirty senior officers from the various corps in the army donned their new ranks at the function today.
