The cammies are different, actually.
But they are all similar enough to make ID in low light or slight distance very tricky.
So far, the SAF helmet netting is the most distinctive feature of the uniform. (Or SAR-21 if you have one).
The reason I picked this marsh/swamp picture is that this is the first time I see TNI soldiers with a helmet netting quite similar to SAF!!
During WW2 when everybody's uniforms, helmets etc were distinctly different, there were still lots of friendly fire incidents especially in very low visibilitty. Now even with good visibility, you can't bloody tell who's who!!!
It'll be interesting to think during war time how to differentiate ourselves from our neighbours? SAF and MAF especially look alike. -

TNI AD uniforms are different if u see up close..the colour is diff...their webbing already is different...plus they got a ghillie thingy on their back...

I can spot 1 difference between them and us! They donno how to apply camou paint on their necks and other exposed areas!

I didn't say they are the same.
If you've been in the jungle, even during the day, a Indo soldier dressed like this standing 10 m away you won't be able to recognise the difference instantly. If he is crouching down or partly behind vegetation, then the cahnce of telling friend from foe becomes zero.
When you are excited during a firefight, you may hesitate shooting for a fraction of a second and get killed. Or you may shoot too soon only to find it's another SAF guy.
In WW2, in Vietnam, in Korea, in Iraq etc. the opposing sides looked very different even in silhouette. Despite totally different helmets, weapons, webbings, etc etc. inevitably there were friendly fire amongst the ground forces themselves (don't say if air force or armour involved).
With the current situation, if we ever go to war withour neighbours, it would be quite chaotic. -

However, I have to say that these pictures look posed.
The dead don't look very dead...
But it was really the Indonesian flag conveniently posed for the picture that causes suspicion.
I can just imagine the commander going: "Hmmm... while you're taking pictures of this war crime that we are committing, why don't you first let me put an Indonesian flag there to make sure human rights website know who to condemn."
Many years ago there were a similar set of photos only the victims were women. Also proven to be fake. -

I wonder about all the other SAF personnel and who actually will have the guts not to say anything. -
We can change to digital camo but what if Indo & MY do as well? Then what? I dunno, changing uniforms solely for the purpose of preventing friendly fire doesn't sound logical.

I do agree that it is not the best solution.
But I can't think of any other ways to distinguish our uniform with those of our neighbours?
Or do you feel that this is not necessary to look different from our neighbours? -

Anyway, can confirm liao ah....i read some thingy on my Bn notice board about the stoppage of issue of malaria pills to troops based in singapore because by 2008 they will issue a uniform with some extra layer that's suppose to be mozzie proof or something haha. -
I think if your cammies look alike is not really going to matter much in the fog of war.
Of course having greatly different cammies help, but then again I think doing it simply for helping to tell friend from foe probably isn't factored in that much when choosing what to wear... how well it hides you and how well it works as a field uniform are probably higher considerations. -

i am quite against the mozzie proof idea...
mozzies evolve fast u noe..
so wat happens if a soldier is in garrison wear in an overseas camp?..
anywaes...i see it as SAFs stingy way of cutting back costs...
onli singapore used the old meloprim tablets in the world..
even sri lanka used a much more costlier but better malaria pill...
meloprim caused a death or 2...not good for the liver as wat my MO used to say..
when i orded in feb..they were using mefloquine instead...
