i have read countless ADJ magazine.. and irreguardless who owns it or where it is from... its content is hardly up to par with establish defence mags.
ADJ is more like a picture book for elementary schoolers with more commericials then real snoops.
and when it comes to affairs of malaysia... get ready for some sky rocketing rides of self delusions.

They are less reliable because they are nationally based. This has got nothing to do with prejudice. They are simply less factual. Especially those written that are literally waving the Malaysian flag. This waters down the credibility of such magazines. Of course, it`s a totally different thing if you`re Malaysian.
Just take a look at ADJ/Tempur(espaically Tempur). The majority are about Malaysian equipment. The topics which cover equipment from elsewhere are generalistic and often come with errors. Not too long ago, they reported that the Endurance class LST/LPDs are carrying baraks. Pure speculation. Hardly credible. They even mis-represented(or rather under-represented) the size of the RSAF about a year ago.
Problems with the Sukhoi purchase? This is hardly new. Even by reading the report(especially the last part), you`ll realise that maintaining and upgrading these assets will be a problem equipment-wise. The same will all thier other purchases. I would not be surprised they end up ala the Migs or skyhawks. Some would call it a `zoo.' -
Tempur is not nationally based magazine, they are a bit critical about ATM (read the last part about Sukhoi's), most of the critical part are writen in malay, some of their writers are from Perajurit, they left Perajurit due to office politic and disagreement on certain issues and form Tempur. Perajurit is the one waving the flag or the one carrying balls. They are all civilians.
Ofcourse it's about malaysian, if you want to read about foreign equipment then you read foreign magazines....i used to buy israeli magazine like Born in Battle and Defence Update during the 80's, most article is about israels equipment and i'm not complaining because that is what i want, pictures and stories of israeli stuff, but i also understand that it's not accurate either due to local censorship. Ofcourse Janes and Military Technology talk about foreign stuff but not much pictures on Asian nation....im sure many are not that stupid as to buy malaysian magazine hoping to read about american or Nato war machine, yes they wrote it also but dont waste time reading it....and i'm sure people are not that stupid to expect all magazine tell the real secret of their war machine.....Why should we be bothered with Tempur or Perajurit mis-represented (or rather under-represented) the size of the RSAF? If we want to read about the SAF then we should read it in our local magazines or websites, David Boey write good stuff in the Starits Times, if we're lucky enough janes and military technology will write something or you can go here http://pdff.sytes.net/index.php?showtopic=1192 a lot of stuff from the newspaper or magazines about singapore...... -
Ah i see, you felt the brunt of my comments having bought so many magazines from these publishers over at Johor Bahru. I have read some of the articles found in Tempur too. As far as credibility is concerned, they are behind international magazines like Janes, etc. The fight between the two privately owned magazines is interesting but again it supports the point that they have to fight for readers to stay afloat.
While you cannot take in verbatim everything any magazine says. You cannot possibly take in more as per what is represented in these local magazines. It is no different than reading a locally produced magazine on military issues. Like any other competitive magazine on sale to the masses, they need to ensure they stay profitable. They are no different than your run of the mill magazine you find in the newstand.
And no. Tempur is witten largely in Malay. Tempur is started in Malaysia. I am sure many are not stupid enough to discern its clientale where readership is concerned. Hence, Tempur is a local magazine and with it, the gap where credibility is concerned. And if i want to read more about thier military, i would read thier publications produced by the MAF first. Like our Pioneer, etc. And then perhaps Janes and so on and so forth. Local magazines like Perajurit and Temput would be last. AdJ too. -
i bought it(tempur) because it has a lot of pic. Perajurit just sucks.

well, like tankfanatic, i bought those magazine for the pictures, but only ATM's photo not other foreign countries photo as i can get those in the net, not the article....Janes pay for infomation, my friend's skin is thick enough to complain the price of JDW compare to the quality of paper or pictures in that magazine, so he got the answer directly from them....i dont think tempur or any other magazine from malaysia pay for those info but only to journalist (who want to work for free?)....Right now i'm interested about the Philippines New indigenous armored vehicle, so where can i get those? obviously here the philippines forum and not Tempur or Perajurit http://pdff.sytes.net/index.php?showtopic=4320 .....if janes were to publish it, it'll be either a month from now and with only 1 photo......

there's not many photo of ATM in ADJ and ADD, but if you want, woodlands library got Perajurit, you can borrow it to see and to scan the photos.....only photo not the article. Tempur is bi-lingual but mostly in malay....well the magazine is very cheap.....only about RM$11 (S$4.80?) and RM$15 (S$6.60?) as opposed to JDW which is over a thousand dollars for a year subscribtion which i cant afford. it's not an effort to go there as i live in woodland....i can walk across the causeway if i want to. and that is where i have my haircut for RM10 (S$4.40?) plus other stuff where you top up once a month just to stretch my sing dollars further.....i'm not the type who complain too much. if spending here too expensive i just go across to spend.....Originally posted by Thrall79:Ah i see, you felt the brunt of my comments having bought so many magazines from these publishers over at Johor Bahru. forgive me if i am wrong.. but the impression i get from reading the exchange between thrall and spider is that both agreed that tempur and watever malaysian defence magazines just aint up to level... with the more credible magazines like janes'
only difference is that spider justified the lower quality in view of the price and scope of the magazine.
understandably... we dont go to africa to see polar bear.. and one cannot expect sharksfins to be served at the roadside.
in conclusion.... take malaysia defence magazine with a ton of salt.

its true. most of the pic of weapon and equipment of MAF in both magz were scoop and no available in other magz. For examples this pic.
PT-91M . This is the latest pic of it during its last 400 km combat trial. The trial were done in secret and this is the only pic allowed to be released.
you wont find this in Janes pal. In fact you wont find this pic antwhere in the world!
So not a ton of salt. I'd say .....50-50. The article are crap but the pic are good. -
pictures are no long worth a thoudsand words... as in the past...
if their articles are not reliable and accurate, what guarantees then do you have that their pictures are not either old, doctored or even photoshoped? or maybe from some unrelated event?
i have seen many doctored, old and photoshoped photos from many defence magazines, that has been used to support the article from which they are supposed to imply, but is not so....
which is why credibility is of the utmost concern for serious military enthusiasist.
without credibility... whatever article and pictures must be taken with a serious amount of salt and doubt... sometimes simply relegate to mere propaganda out of nationalistic fever... meant to be consumed by the gullible mass. -
i'm one of the many military anthusiast here but not a serious one.....i'm the type who borrow or buy cheap magazine and read it for a few hours and throw it one side waiting till next month to read another issues, i think i see more porn than read military stuff.....the kind of people who read tabloits and entertainment magazines.....most of the time people like us work as we have dateline to meet, we also have other social gathering or clubbing with people who didnt share our interest, not to mention that i have to go to Dubai this weekend for a Jeep Jamborie with fellow singaporean i know who work there. im in landscaping not spying. most of us got no time to do inteligence work for our gahmen , being singaporean we dont want to work for free with no benefit or cpf. as singaporean we are gullible......not all but most of us.....thats why i go JB to get cheap stuff.....

Its not photoshoped. LOL. Im in the graphic business for 10 years. I know (literally) if it was doctored. Also i got connection with a polish engineer to confirmed that pic is genuine.
But some pic such as their grunts or equipment were (ofcourse any other Mags do it too) from their archive and were used again and again. Im only interested the pic of new equipment and also the pic of combat exercise. So far none were repetative and all were scoop. (lol i bought it every month) -
i know lah it's not photoshop.....i'm in landscape and photoshop is one of the few software we have to use to do presentation.....sometime i just gave up and let people think they are right.....but me watching porn is true (this one i dont want to bluff)

In tempur the pic were quite high res. so can scan and touchup with PS to make it sharper. And its quite thick compare to its price. -

Hmm... RMAF really serious in disbanding the MiG-29 from the 19th Squadron
and changed it SU-30? Can they just form a new fighter squadron and keep the MiG since RMAF do not possess large nos of fighter jet? -
duhhhh.... those MIG is still flying maaa ....... another 2 new skuadron will be create and base at Gong Kedak. It is 11 Skuadron (Golden Cobra) and 17 Skuadron (Bat). They will not disband 19 Skuadron (Cobra) till 2010.

RMAF Takes Delivery Of Sukhoi SU-30MKM Fighter Aircraft

IRKUTSK (Russia), May 23 (Bernama) -- After a four-year wait, the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will take delivery of two Sukhoi SU-30MKM multi-role fighter aircraft Thursday.
They will be the first two of 18 aircraft ordered by Malaysia in May 2003, being the most sophisticated aircraft of its kind in Southeast Asia.
Chief of Air Force Jen Datuk Seri Azizan Ariffin and Defence Ministry Secretary-General Tan Sri Ahmad Latffi Hashim will receive the aircraft on behalf of the Malaysian government at the Irkut Aircraft Corporation manufacturing plant here.
Malaysia and the Russian government agency, Rosoboronexport, signed a US$900 million (RM3.4 billion) contract for 18 Sukhoi Su-30MKM (Modernizirovannyi Kommercheskiy Malaysia or Modernised Commercial Malaysia) aircraft.
In return for the purchase, Russia agreed to train and send a Malaysian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS).
The 16 other Su-30MKM aircraft will be delivered to Malaysia in stages up to the middle of next year.
Other than Malaysia, the Indonesian Air Force has two Su-27 and eight Su-30MK2 aircraft while Vietnam has four Su-30 and 12 Su-27 aircraft.
Defence analysts believe, however, that the Su-30MKM and a similar version, the Su-30 MKI, used by the Indian Air Force are the most modern Su-30 aircraft in the market.
Although the Su-30 aircraft of the RMAF and the Indian Air Force are the same, the electronic equipment and avionics used by the aircraft are different, for political reasons.
India's aircraft are equipped with systems produced by Israel while Malaysia, which does not have diplomatic ties with the Jewish state, uses electronic and avionics systems from France, India and South Africa for the Su-30MKM.
RMAF's two-seater Su-30MKM aircraft are equipped with the thrust vectoring control (TVC) engine system and two small wings by the side of the pilot's seat called "canard" for maximum air movement.
The TVC engine system relates to the control of the nozzle movement and vectoring for determining movement in the air.
Maximum movement in the air is a factor that determines whether the aircraft can defeat the enemy during aerial combats or dogfights.
The Su-30MKMs can fly for 4.5 hours covering 3,000 km with a normal fuel tank but with inflight refuelling, the time and distance can be extended to 10 hours and 8,000 km.
The ability to operate over long distances is important to RMAF as Malaysia is vast with undulating landscape and the peninsula is separated from Sabah and Sarawak by the South China Sea.
In addition, Malaysia also has oil platforms owned by Petronas and its production-sharing contract partners, not only close to shore but also in deep-sea areas.
The ability to safeguard oil resources is important not only to check external threats but also ensure that the nation's sovereignty is not questioned by other countries.
Defence analysts believe that the delivery to RMAF of the Su-30MKM aircraft that can cover long distances has shifted the balance of power in Southeast Asia.
The fighter aircraft can fly at Mach 2 and can carry about eight tonnes of weapons in 12 storage centres or "hardpoints" in the lower portion of the aircraft.
The Su-30MKM aircraft will be equipped with air-to-air, air-to-land and anti-radiation missiles, for destruction of electronic equipment like radar, and laser-guided bombs.
They are also equipped with high-powered radar of the "NO11M Bars" type that can detect up to 15 enemy targets and attack four of them simultaneously.
The "Bars" radar enable the aircraft to detect ships from 400 km away and smaller vessels from 120 km off.
The ability to detect targets from afar using high-powered radar enables the Su-30MKM jet-fighters to double up as early warning aircraft.
