Snipers carry more then the average grunt considering they have to go unsupported in hostile areas for longer periods of time.Plus they carry their sniper rile which weights like twice as much as the SAR21.And they carry a secondary weapon too.Plus a spotter scope/bino which is bigger and bulkier then our standard bino's.The they have to carry their guille suit thingy which weights i believe 5kgs.Then carry cammo netting for their "camp" site or observation point.Oh and radio/comms gear and night vision. All this and unlike the average section of 7 men there's only 2 of them.Originally posted by Let:Some studies have shown that women soldiers CAN POTENTIALLY make very good snipers. I think WWII (russians) & the Balkans / Mid East conflicts proved it...
They have some qualities like inherently more patience, calmness etc. Unlike men who are more likely to be Type A personality. But those types wouldn't be chosen to be sniper obviously.
Also snipers do not need to carry such heavy loads compared to conventional grunts. Newer rifles are also more compact (bullpups) and lighter (polymer materials).
Sniping role is considerably mroe suitable than you think... compared to Arty or chiong suah...
But there are more issues that come in though... like women being more likely to get infections down there, peeing (but snipers will stay motionless & pee in their pants if necessary what), running with gear from forward positions in a hurry...
Pvt. Pavlichenko fought for about two and a half months near Odessa, where she recorded 187 kills. When the Germans gained control of Odessa, her unit was pulled to be sent to Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula. In May 1942, Lieutenant Pavlichenko was cited by the Southern Army Council for killing 257 German soldiers. Her total confirmed kills during World War II was 309, including 36 enemy snipers.

The physicality aspects between the 2 sexes is a moot point that doesn't even need debate. Certainly nobody has ever claimed that the average female soldier would be able to carry as much or as fast as the average men.Originally posted by |-|05|:Snipers carry more then the average grunt considering they have to go unsupported in hostile areas for longer periods of time.Plus they carry their sniper rile which weights like twice as much as the SAR21.And they carry a secondary weapon too.Plus a spotter scope/bino which is bigger and bulkier then our standard bino's.The they have to carry their guille suit thingy which weights i believe 5kgs.Then carry cammo netting for their "camp" site or observation point.Oh and radio/comms gear and night vision. All this and unlike the average section of 7 men there's only 2 of them.
Take this coming from a trained sniper, most mission does require one to carry massive combat load. Of course it really depends each army doctrine on deployment of snipers.Originally posted by Let:...
WWII in Russia featured the urban rubble of Stalingrad was a prime example, where little effort is needed to get behind enemy lines (u can even let the enemy over run your sniping position). Similarly in the Balkan conflict settings of the towns/cities.
Distilled to the bare basics, where its just the 1 x sniper, 1 x rifle and a small quantity of ammo, women snipers CAN be even better suited, certainly no worse.
Might as well send in the biggest gun to do the job? Get a howitzer to dig out entrenched opponents. That's how the mole-like Japs got dug out in WWII.Originally posted by equlus84:I have read that back in the 80s there are snipers deployed at battalion level in SAF, can anyone verify this? If yes, then why did army remove the sniper platoon from the BN?
Another question is I seen before pics of 3SIR in Fibua training in defense documentary. There was this segment that they say urban snipers are employed to pick out enemy target. Are these sniper members of the BN or are they from the BDE? I was thinking since most rifle coy have quite a number of spare commanders and men lying around, why not introduce coy lvl marksmen and arm them with sniper rifle that are semi-automatic? They come in handy in taking out MG enemies hidden in well entrenched position.
Yea my point exactly.Originally posted by tchiew:Take this coming from a trained sniper, most mission does require one to carry massive combat load. Of course it really depends each army doctrine on deployment of snipers.
Say if each bde has a platoon of snipers (too few to deploy around), they will most likely be employed to carry out high value mission, which normally requires they to inflintrate deep into enemy territory and operate far from parent unit. Thus, carry heavy combat load.
Where as a country with platoon of snipers at company or battlion level may use them for less valuable targets, harressing enemy advance, take out heavy weapon or defensive missions. These snipers would require less combat load due to their restricted area of operation (close to parent unit)
All i'm saying is a sniper should be versatile enough to carry out different missions, ability to carry heavy combat load is a BIG BIG plus.
