Wonder why they need such piece of hardware. I have never seen such equipmen in any other army before. Is there a need for digging holes? Can the SCE guys shed some light?

with my limited standard of chinese (the jappy words have some similarities to chinese mar. ) i will attempt to guess that its a ermm... tunnel digging equipment tat is in rescue efforts for in drilling debris when there's an earthquake.
ya know, when got earthquake in Japan and building collapse, they will probably bring out this equipment to drill into the debris. just a guess -
the equipment don't look like its designed for digging tunnel, more like digging vertical holes..
it can be used for digging holes for planting cratering charge, definitely saves a lot of time and manpower to dig holes for the charges, especially using the manual boring tools on a long stretch of hard ground. -
I have seen somewhere before that there is a Soviet era trench digging machine. It helps to dig rapidly a depth of abt 1m, for those FOFO type of operation.

Trench digging type i have seen before but tunneling ones i have not. Unless of course it is for rescuing earthquake victims of which Japan have alot of earthquakes.
