I'd like to ask actually how large was the scale of the Malayan Emergency? I've read sources that said that the Emergency was in fact a full scale guerrilla war but if thats the case,I find it rather curious that its mentioned so rarely in our history textbooks and generally not well known in Singapore? Surely a conflict on such a large scale would be permanantly etched in the civilian mindset?
that's probably because singapore was not subjected to persistent (if any) ambushes and regular loss of life. only the malaya peninsular offered the bandits many opportunities for sabotage and terror.
it's a very huge incident. almost like what iraq is now?
the difference is that the british were effective in ending the emergency in a way that lessened the loss of life in Malaya. and allowed malaya to prosper in the process
The Malayan Emergency is indeed a full-scale guerilla war. Maybe not as intense as Iraq today but still a small-scale war. The British administrators of the day announce the war as an 'emergency' mainly because of insurance issues!
