Reading the report in the author's first post, I lost count but I think China has used some rather devious means (as usual) to buy up to 4 carriers so far for study.
There used to be a TV advert in China that was shot above one of these vessels with Carina Lau Kar Ling. There was a full complement of aircrafts on deck even.
I find it strange that they have rejected offers from other people who would build the carriers for them - choosing instead to spend time to R&D and build it themselves.
Operating carriers is definitely the way to go for China. China will feel hapless if it continues to be hemmed in by its lack of REAL sea power.
I don't think the expense will deter them. Besides, the strategic advantage for China to operate a carrier group outweighs all other considerations.
They have sent people up to space already, which is a silly, useless waste of money. But it is one of those chest-beating thing to show the world that "China also can".
So if they will do that, you can bet your last dollar that die die they will have a carrier task force to challenge US for the job of schoolyard bully. -

And US most likely WILL intervene if China invades. If not by committing troops, then by sending naval task force. Or at least a generous supply of arms previously denied. It is in US interests to see China weakened by war.
And China has no choice but to invade Taiwan if she declares independence. Otherwise other parts of China will follow suit and call for independence. China will break into chaos.
Therefore, Taiwan - or specifically the village idiot Chen Sui Bian - by declaring independence, is THE danger to world peace. Somebody should shoot him before he does that.

Past USA-asia wars like Vietnam and Iraq already led to much discontent in USA's heartlands already..why fight/support a war they have no business in?
Besides, technically the 2 China's are on a CIVIL war, asking for help and alliance would make it an INTERNATIONAL war. And if its a civil war, even the UN or USA also can't intervene them. A totally different case from the vietnam or korea war where both countries ended up seeking help from foreign powers.
Would u ask your neighbours for help if theres a quarrel between ur siblings back at home?

Japan apparently is so scare of CHina that they also improve her so call "Defence Force". They even discuss on a possible move in nuclear capabilities.

All of us other nations have too much at stake for any PRC government to play patriot in the 21st century. War is not an option anymore.
China simply cannot sit by and do nothing, for if that is the case, than you can expect the frontier provinces like XinJiang to also follow suit and declare Independence, and this will start a domino process that will have one inevitable consequence; China's disintegration.
While this is a perfectly acceptable outcome for the US, such a disintegration will cause more harm to the region than an outright war between China and Taiwan.

In fact, N Korea might take the opportunity to attack S Korea during a PRC invasion of ROC as US would be too busy to fight on 2 fronts. It's the once in a lifetime opportunity for Korean War 2.
And if the US don't intervene on Taiwan behalf, both Japan and S Korea might both think twice about relying on US for military support. Which in the end means less $$$ for USA. And Japan and S Korea are their last power bases in Asia. If they get kicked out, they will have absolutely no military influence in Asia left. -

USA is a democratic country, the congress and president would need a lot of support to engage in a war. Would a typical hillbilly white american support his country to fight a war half the world around? no..chances are he is more concern about his country's problems e.g. slowing economy and wealth gap.
If they won, what they gain? if they lost what they gain? Demographics showed tht Americans themselves detest fighting these unneccesary wars. (remember hippy period?)Eventually, none of all these Asian war really aided USA in her interest. Except for WWII that brought Japan down to her knees.
As for your views on NK, NK only have 1 reluctant friend, which is PRC. NK is more of a parasite living of PRC's resources. No one in East asia wants a war that would make Korea stronger.
Instead, things should work the other way around, USA should applease China so that China would go against NK. With the new generation of Chinese leaders, relationships with NK and PRC have already gotten downslide. No one likes NK.

Chinese isn't 100% Han. Chinese is a new concept race that includes Hans,mongols,liaos,manchus,tibetians after the Qing era. During Qing, Manchus were 1st class citizens, followed by Mongols as 2nd class citizen. Hans were 3rd class as they were forced to style pigtails and wear manchurian clothes.
in the latter part, much manchu dominace was gone and even the manchu bloodlines and culture was assimilated with the hans.. -

The peak was around late 1700s, during Qianlong's rule. All over 50 chinese ethnicity came under one rule, living as one country.
China was only one of the occupied land of the mongol, during the yuan dynasty. They never ruled china as china. I won't consider the land space the mongol occupied as china territory. -

Those who still have impression that China is weak /poor or backward or don't think China "has arrived" should at least watch TV that documentary about Chang Zhiang. You have no idea how much $$$ the chinese is moving.
While China has a trillion $ in foreign reserves, US has as much if not more in debts! China won't catch up with US just yet but it won't take too long if the chinese don't fight among themselves.
China sending man to space waste of money? If Singapore can do it by simply paying $$$, I believe our govt will consider seriously. Do you know what it meant by having the capability to send a man to space?? The technology behind it? And what this technology will translate to for a nation? Is sad to read some very naive comments here
