Winter Combat

It is now winter in the northern hemisphere.
Here in Shanghai my fridge at 4 degrees C is warmer than my apartment.
My coldest ever combat training was in ROC, where I had only my SAF-issued "sandpaper" texture sweater. As I remember, i couldn't sleep most nights cos the wind was howling and it was quite cold. My teeth actually chattered.
Other "cold weather" training I had were in Singapore after being soaked through with rain. But still bearable if under shade as your uniform eventually warms up with your body heat.
In Korea the cold took almost as many casualties as bullets.
Has any of you who've trained in cold weather care to share your experiences?
Did SAF issue any special warm clothing? -
Well, I was involved in a small scale (singapore perspective) exercise in Taiwan in the middle of Dec. It was like 8 degrees Celsius when we out in the field and we were out for 2 weeks. We were supplied with ROC winter jackets and padded sleeping bags but sleeping in those on cold steel vehicle floors was really bad... our detachment of 3 men actually had to sleep closely to use each others' body heat (but not that closely ....
). Ration wise was good at the FU area... hot porridge with fried buns *like those for chilli crab...but once in the field, you boil water and heat up "bian dan" to eat. After a while the yucky japanese curry type of bian dan was the worse of the lot. But then again, all this was like in 1991 ... more than 15 years ago. -
