yamato? But read somewhere it was not fully utilised, and then towards the end due to high running costs, it cant work to its max in a battle, and hence got sunk by the allies.

i think for Yamato, it was created and built as 'most powerful battleship" in mankind history, thats on paper, given the armor and arnaments that she has. unfortunately, the Japanese navy want her keep her wrapped with cotton wool to prevent her from any 'scratches' until its too late.
as such, and luckily, for that, she did not go out to fight a real battle before she goes down. The only and last fight she has was, in a way, unfair fight, without air cover and such. Compared to Bismark who fought and sunk ships and went down in a more 'bloody' manner, Yamato 'died' in a less gallant manner.
its an irony, i am glad that Yamato 'died' in that manner, rather than went out to sea and sunk more ships. But from a military nut point of view, she should be given opportunity to shine - if only she fights on side of the allies.... -
The Iowa class US battleships in my opinion are the most powerful battleships ever designed... New Jersey, Missouri, Wisconsin and Iowa...

That has to be the Yamato and her sister ship Musashi. Otherwise the New Jersey class ships- Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri. Bismarck and the Brits won't make the mark because they don't have bigger guns nor better armour.

The bismark didn't even get to use its primary guns. It was engaging with its Auxillaries all along.

Instead, it was Bismarck that gave the Allies absolut hell.
Now, with the rise of the aircraft carrier, battleships have become a far less important component of a Navy fleet. Are there any major contemporary navies that still has battleships in their fleets? -

What about the Soviet Navy's nuclear-powered Kirov-class battlecruisers? They lack the big guns, but her modern weapon systems and collection of missiles more than makes up for it.

Bismark supposed to have another escort ship Prince Eugene (spelling??) but it was not there with her at that time and she had to travel alone. Moreover, Bismark's captain didnt managed to fill-up the oil tank fully during her last port call which was fatal as she couldnt steam at full speed when pursued by the subsequent british fleets coming after her. Unfortunately, a british torpedo plane damaged one of her rudder and turned Bismark back towards the pursuing british ships...
The british fired at her at point blank distance but couldnt sink her. It was bloody on the deck and Bismark's crew knowing that the british will never give up firing until sinking her, decided to sink the boat by themselves using explosives. Her captain who was still alive went down together with her while some of the crews managed to bail out to tell the story...
Bismark fought well but was not lucky enough in her maiden voyage. Unlike Yamato which was just big and a white elephant, Bismark is the ship the allied feared the most as it was equiped with the most accurate firing system. -
At that time of the Bismarck's maiden voyage, the German Navy is sorely in one key area, Dual Purpose Guns. Therefore, when Bismarck left port, her AA configuration was rather inadequate with just several limited high-angle guns at best. Of course there are also light flaks placed on wherever deck space is available. Had there been DP guns fitted on her, she could have warded off the torpedo bombers.
Another drawback of the Bismarck's design was her poor distribution of armour. In fact, some areas which were designed to withstand up to 15inch shelling were penetrated by 8inch shelling.
I'll pick Yamato as the most powerful battleship in history. It would be interesting to see her duel one on one with the Iowa class battleship. -
I don't think Yamato is the best...... on paper, it is the best. having 18" guns instead of the 16" use by the US or 12" use by the German.
But Yamato was never "Fully" use in naval warfare. In the battle of Midway, it acts more as a flag ship for the japanese navy...... didn't even fire its guns. After the 4 jap carriers were sunk...... Yamato sail back to japanese port and did not leave until the US naval were at japan's doorstep.
IMHO...... Yamato is only the most powerful on paper. The US battleship which live through more battle till today is the best...... -
still tink iowa class better leh read somewher tat say although yamato armour every thing number high but thier steel impure or something then almost same as iowas as americans used wat high grade steel n thier 18" guns were not much of use compared to the americans cos of thie aiming thingy then say american ships have wat good aiming stuff... correct me pls
