I dont think it is in service yet although it has been used in action on a trial / evaluaton basis - right way of getting things done ; use in combat, make modification and refinements and then put into service.
Looks like it will turn out to be a good weapons system with room to grow.
Its ergonomics is like M16 - better than our SAR21 and much lighter to boot ! -

I have a doubt as to what makes it suitable for Special Operations and secondly why a non-special forces version not develop for the regular army to replace their M16. It looks pretty decent to me. -
Well, For starters, maybe the rifle is used for close to med range shooting, so it may be used to replace the M-16.

Well, they can buy the licence to build it. That will cut cost and create jobs for Americans. As for it being modular, shouldn't be a problem as most of the US soldiers will modify their personal weapons nowadays.Originally posted by Shotgun:Expensive

Oh yar, why did they cancel the XM8? Any reasons? Maybe spend too much in Afganistan and Iraq so not enough money to buy new rifles. -

Frankly... this rifle looks like a rammed up version of the M4... what benefits does this rifle runs over the M4 ?? more plastics ? more expensive ? more reliable ? Definately no..
I would just stick to the mod-up M4. -

The SCAR is much more like An FNC over the M16/M4 type!
Bascially the M16 and M4 as we know looks kool. very accurate and ergonomics is the best! but it has an inherit problem whereby the gas system having to blow back into the bolt carrier that create 1) access HEAT in Full auto firing 2) carbon built up! thus reliability suffers!
SCAR bascially eliminate that with a piston just like FAL or AK type action where by a piston rod push the carrier and action instead of dirty gas! and without that also reduces heat in the firing area and thus reliability increases! SO to answer most questions, the FNC type action will be much more reliable than M4! hands down!! erognomics may not be there..
Not saying M4 is not good just there are better system out there. I am a die hard M4 fan and recently got me my Ultimate M4 which is a piston base M4 !look at the post I have in this board! it has the ergo, accuracy and all the kool ninja stuff I can put on the M4 ... and also a piston to eliminate the fundamental problem of the M4,

checkout another post i did here on the piston M4 ..
basically instead of having the direct gas impregnation which the gas is blown from the hole in the barrel to a gas tube and blowing directly into the bolt carrier to move the bolt carrier back. We have the gas blowing into a piston which in turns move the bolt carrier back.
Bascially without the gas blow back into the bolt carrier, you don;t get all the hi pressure crystalized carbon, hi temperature in sustain firing. thus a much more efficient system of operation with less heat!
IN that! you get a much more reliable weapon in all ways ! ALso reason the SCAR is being use ! it uses a piston just like the FAL, AUG, AK, SIG, HK G36 etc etc! the direct gas system of the M16 is flawed in the begining.

The direct gas system was supposed to make the weapon more accurate, given there are less parts moving when the weapon cycles... but I guess the tradeoff in reliability didn't pan out too well.

yes! the direct gas makes the weapon more accurate! but the trade off for reliability is just too much!
Again! the M16 is not a match rifle and more of an assualt rifle , thus the accuracy does not make such a big differnce.
With the piston M4 I have !i can still do 1 MOA in 100 meter with RG( Radway green) ammo and that to me is very good for a non match rifle!

I remember watching a video of a gun review. Soime gun made in Europe or US that can shoot many runs and yet the firing pin is not dirty or hot. Wonder wad gun is that....
