Come on people... there was a time when the regional air forces like the RAAF is flying F/A-18s but we are still flying Hunters.
We should be happy with the current state of our air force. -
i dont think its just a question of affordability... the yanks might not wanna sell it at all.
our neighbours F-18 is just eye candy if mahatir's word is believable... it seems that the americans have the key to their system and much of their F-18 functions has been locked down.
even if it was a full capable F-18. they only have 8... number wise.. i hardly consider that as sufficient to challenge anybody, much less the RSAF. -
these numbers and type of fighters that they have would mean nothing if..
1) they are not fully combat capable
2) do not have well-disciplined personnel to maintain
3) no spares
4) cannot turn-round aircraft fast enough
5) still fighting one dimension
Air Power is the key... -
RSAF still has the edge in SEA.
We have not only the hardware but a complete infrastructure for an air war.
We have the doctrine, tactics, training , hardware & people to generate sorties, protect & dominate the skies, support our army & navy, strike strategic targets, protect & repair airfields / aircraft , recover aircraft & pilots etc.
The fact is that no other airforce in SEA comes close to RSAF in warfighting ability. Individual aircraft types do not count in above scenario. eg 4 AWACS , 60 F16s, 40 F5s, a multilayered air defence will simply outfight a squadron or two of SU30s, no matter how good they are.
But of couse, the main aim of SAF and RSAF is never to prove our point. -
Our Chief of Air Force is a President's Scholar from Oxford University. The best of the best.

It's one thing just to get a good plane up and put it into a fight, and another to have the tatics and infrastructure to actually use your air force for something.
In the Falklands the carrier-based British Harriers were certainly outclassed by the per-type aircraft of their opponents, but they had a more cohorent, well-trained force and it paid off in the end.
Of course all this is not for us to get cocky, but a good thing to take into consideration before one goes down all into splitting airs over turn rates, engine trust and stuff like that. -

RSAF has better war fighting capability?
I don't wanna anyhow make this kinda assumptions. hA.
RSAF has better aircraft and numerically superior.
We have better logistics infrastructure to support the air force operations.
We have better air defence designs.
And are technologically better off.
Since we have really fought a war, and we donno what the heartware of the NSF and regulars in RSAF is like. I don't dare to straight away claim that we have better warfighting capability. But i guess u can say, the signs are there. =D -
You fight war by sticking your paper qualification on your tanks, ships and warplanes ?
You are implying that a man's paper qualification is a pre-requisite in winning a war... -
I say SAF ONLY weakness is e fact tat youngsters nowaday have no faith in defending Singapore & r only 2 quick 2 comment how small we r bah bah etc

But in the meantime, we just have to do our best to make sure that if it really comes down to it, we can do what it takes to win.
It's another thing entirely to have a total lack of faith in one's own ability to defend ourselves... Israel would not be around if all they thought about was how to small they were or how they could fail. -

Blame it on the softening of training these days. In my time, we trained even when it rained. I still recall "swimming" through my BIC during BMT. These days, grey clouds appear & all run for shelter. No wonder these youngsters start to doubt themselves. I mean how can soldiers who run at the sight of rain, possibly defend the country?
When things got tough for us, we grit our teeth, swore like sailors and perservered. These days, when the going gets tough, the little boys start whining. Sigh!! Just look at the NS threads in some local forums. My PC give me extra duty lah. My PS called me idiot lah. Whine whine whine! -
But sgf, do u noe that SG has one of the highest lightning percentage in the world? Last time 3rd GDS 8th mono if i am not wrong, my sgt who was a man during that era claims that an officer was killed by lightning when they were training out in the open. Thus the exercise halt during cat 1 is not bcos our ppl are soft.
Besides, if the training is in marsiling, which is highly vegetated, most prob the ex will go on -
To be clear, ex still goes on when it rains if you are under sufficent overhead vegetation that is.
But lighting is a very real threat, no joke about it. People do get killed by this in Singapore and training in the open during Cat 1 is a certain no go. -

out in the open yes, but that 2LT was standing under one lone tree in the open when it start to rain. it can't just kill one and no one else get hurt when lightning strike. integrity? leadership? too bad he got his day. i think we out of point liao??? -

He was one of the few malay 2LT that was selected to enter the GDS unit. He was back to check if there are anyone else on the defense location, when he was struck. The path was through the antenna of the 7 series signal set - body - and ground through his right leg.
