Let's just say had I gone down the other path, I might be an Australian with dual passports now, but probably barred from entering Singapore on pain of arrest for eluding NS.
So when I got my stripes, I actually thought back to those years when I wanted very much to just jump ship and run away.. and the thought chilled me, because NS was not as bad as I had feared when I was in JC. -

Are our Singaporean conscripts too soft? We'll know when we bring them out on extended field exercise and subject them to a total deprivation civilian luxuries. Then we'll see how many are left that didn't report sick for headache, toothache, and finger cuts.
I don't know why they did what they did to BMTC. While it is good that they organise their syllabus to be more objective, it is disappointing to hear new recruits crying and whining about "25 counts of 4" of jumping jacks to be an absolutely horrendous tekan session. The norm according to them was, 5-15 counts of 4.
I'm not a super fit or tough guy. But, i remember days in BMT where we'd kena wack 1 time chia lat chia lat with 120 counts of 4 during 5BX, go "KNNCCB THAT 2LT XXXXX!!" and carry on the rest of the day. Hearing from my new enlistee friends these days, i begin to wonder.... Were we the only stupid fools getting tekaned in the morning everyday? Cos now it appears to me that, we were hit by for more than the "Norm." -

The ROK troops during Vietnam was much more feared than their South Viet and US Counterparts...The way they interrogate and Kill NVA prisoners gave them a very fearful reputation...

Actually hor, all this crappy siong training to create the ultimate warrior hypothesis is no longer relevant in the 21th century warfare.
Give you a choice, you want a country bumking who is as fit as a bull or a weakass nerb to fight the 21th century warfare?
The answer is pretty clear based on the last recent warfare.
