hmm... looks like china is getting more and more advanced. hopefully these machines will not have to be put to real use and hopefully the rise of china will bring abt more peace and stability in Asia rather than more conflicts

The J-10 is probably comparable to a F-16 Block 50/52 in overall performance instead of the Eurocanards, keeping in mind that the J-10 draws from the Lavi prototype which is essentially a F-16 class aircraft instead of the more complex twin-engined Rafale or Eurofighter. The DoD report has to be careful not to underestimate the potential threat though.
Seems that F-22A production will go beyond 180+ units currently approved after all since any crisis in the Taiwan straits will require a potent counter to these modern Chinese fighters, which obviously can carry PGMs and other land attack munitions as well.
To be honest, I was really impressed by the pic of the 2 J-10s in approach. A new and impressive image of the PLAAF which used to remind me of outdated MiG-17/19/21 copies. -
Even comparable to F16 BLK50/52 is remarkable!
Just think about the revealed J-10 is only the basic version, the more advanced or “super-10” J-10 is in the advanced development stage.
And the quantity of J-10 will be 1200 finally.
BTW, PLAAF already operates more Flankers than Russian airforce. -
I think it is a fantastic plane... and umm i think the pilots are abit big.. becuase witner clothing? hehe..
When i was in china i got to see a few chinese Migs above my head... 17 i think.. cant really tell..
its quite rare considering the SIZE of china and get to see them flying.
the rear looks like an F-16. even the bubble canopy.
Nevertheless, its an impressive plane i must say.
oh and umm ceecookie... how many chinese made things u have at home? if its alot, i wish ur house doesnt fall apart. -
China's Air Force equipped with domestic-made new-generation fighter
Sources with the Air Force of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) said Friday that it has been equipped with China-made new-generation fighter aircraft, the Jian-10, or Fighter-10.
An Air Force officer told Xinhua the force's "overall battle effectiveness has been noticeably enhanced" after being equipped with the aircraft and through intensive drills and training.
He disclosed that Jian-10 was capable of launching "precision attacks while hedgehopping and making long-distance assaults at altitude above 10,000 meters". Air fleet drills have also been successfully carried out, he said.
The Information Office of the State Council also said on Friday in a white paper on national defence: "The Air Force is working to build an 'informationized' air fighting force with both offensive and defensive capabilities.
"It is reducing the number of combat aircraft, giving priority to the development of new fighters as well as air and missile defense weapons," it said.
The military sources have never revealed the specifications of Jian-10, but foreign observers have said it is comparable to mainstream fighter aircraft in the West.

Actually if you look at the picture again, only the 2 guys in the front are noticeably big, and much older. Obviously they are the squadron leaders so they are leading the formation. Seniority is a big thing in PLA. -

Of course the F-16 Block 50/52 series will have the advantage in sensors and other avionics, not to mention higher levels of readiness.
However, by a one on one comparison, this probably translates to only a few percentage points in performance difference.
It is essential that the RSAF continually updates our F-16 fleet, even though they were delivered brand new not too long ago. An upgrade to Block 60 standards whilst retaining the APG-68(V)9 and F100-PW229 engine would prove to be cost efficient in maximising the advantage over potential threats. Not to mention a already high level of commodity wth the Israeli F-16I which would facilitate the integration of various Israeli AAMs and PGMs. Given Indonesia's interest in Chinese arms at attractive prices, I expect to see a future ORBAT similar to that of the PLAAF, with J-10s in Indonesian Air Force colors supporting their small Su-27/30 force (4) delivered in 2003, with another 12 or 14 on the cards.
*Export Su-27 Flanker series and their derivatives delivered to the PLAAF totals 172 Su-27SK/UB and 100 Su-30MK/MK2 . At least a few have been lost in accidents but it is not certain as to whether there were attrition replacements made.
