Yes, its important to have constant survelliance to prevent ourselves from being getting caught unaware. Having our own satellites definitely helps.

I hope those engineers/scholars elite types don't get to bedazzled by all these new fangled toys and think that technology is the be-all and end-all of everything ....
sats can't tell you what the other side's thinking, saying, or planning ... they can't even show you much what others are doing anyways ... -
You place too much faith on satellite survellience. Cloud cover is a major issue. Try Google earth and take a look at Bishan. I was told it is a permanent parking space for clouds.

Cannot depend too much on technology although it helps alot in many scenarios. But technology can also be fooled by a clever enemy.
The former USSR & Israeli were masters of HUMINT. However, the recent Israeli fiasco in Lebanon shows that even the masters of HUMINT make mistakes or are not good enough when faced with a very determinined and smart enemy who can adapt and respond accordingly.
Old fashioned HUMINT is part and parcel of total intelligence gathering / execution. It is a capability which is very extremely difficult to be good at.
