  Saw those ancient clips. My god...those troopers using the 1903 Springfield with bayonet attached...better not get near them man. The likelihood of getting stabbed by friendlies from behind is like damn high.

  What criteria are they using to determine the rifles and rankings? Reliability? Accuracy? Cost-effectiveness?

  I believe they adopted the American Colt M4 carbine. it was reported in the news and also in Mil nuts sometime back. it then sparked a topic on bullpup vs conventional loadout again.
  
  for me i'd take the AK-47 over the M-16 but again depending on the situation.
  
  In the SAF i'll take the SAR-21 anyday.

  can't blame the Malaysians for getting rid of the Steyr AUG ! my AUG-A2 is just so fragile.
  
  The plastic use on the AUG is kind of soft, somtimes , you get hot empty brass eat into the stock during ejection. Also my AUG has this constant problems of firing pin comming off after some rapid firing.
  
  I know this maybe a fluke on just the riffle but I have a few occcasion in the range and saw my freind's AUG doing the same thing.
  
  M4 is a good platform, just a piston base M4 would be the ultimate.

  M16A1 is a good rifle ; but needs to be handled with a little care.
  M16A2 is better - slightly tougher.
  However, overall M16 is a great rifle - I think its ergonomics are excellent and it is light.
  
  Don't quite like the SAR 21 except for builtin scope & plastic see thru mag - rifle is also just too heavy. Also, the Safe and Auto /Semi is darn right poor. With M16 it is just an easy flick with the thumb.
  
  AK47 is quite inaccurate out to 200 m. M16 is accurate out to 350 m.
  Also, I think M16, SAR 21 have longer 21 inch barrels while AKs have only about 18 inch ones. Don't know why SAR 21 has 21 inch barrel - newer rifles tend to have barrels around 2 inches shorter.

  Yes. Longer barrels mean that the rifling can spin the bullet more, allowing for greater accuracy.
  
  It also allows the expanding gases to act on the bullet over a longer period of time, increasing the range of the bullet.
