i doubt the Leo2 was purchase not bcos it is cheapo second hand stuff. The M1 is heavier and the Leo2 have greater room for development as the Germans maybe willing to share technology with us unlike the yankees. The Leo2 has better protection. It has a separate compartment to store the ammos thus preventing explosion when hit by rds, they also have in built automated fire-fighting devices as it helps to put out fire when there is internal fire. Not like those Russian tanks with rds surrounding the crew in the turret.

Russian one is more compact,lighter. Mening cheaper to maintain and able to acquire in larger number.They try to have a powerful gun to ensure a first hit probabilites....
