  As I said, I think we are buying "low" for a moment to get a grasp of modern MBT technology. The A4 is a good version to go for that is both useful and educational at the same time. It has a decent protection package, exists in large stocks already (low waiting time), and is cost effective to run for what it offers us.

  MINDEF spokeman already said that they will probably be upgraded, right?
  
  It is cheaper than buying an already upgraded one and will give our DST guys a new pet project. But I do hope they go for the 55 calibre gun with the upgrade. More lethality.
  
  But even as A4, the Leo 2 is by no means a second rate vehicle.
  
  I believe it matches the capabilites of all MBTs in this region including the home grown Korean K1 and Japanese T-90.

  Extremely wise decision for MINDEF to go for the Leopard A4.
  
  Personally, I think 120 mm 44 cal gun is more than sufficient to take out any MBT in the region except an M1A1. 55 cal will be an expensive upgrade. Also, it will make the Leopard even more unwieldy.
  
  Immediate upgrades shud include : -
  
  1. State of the art CITV to give a hunter / killer capability
  2. New fire control system
  3. BMS ( already announced )
  4. Additional add on armor

  Can someone explain to me whats the difference between 44 and/or 55 calibre with the 120mm calibre? What exactly does the former measures? Thanks

  120mm is the diameter of the round, and hence also roughly the internal diameter of the Gun barrel. 120mm/L44 means the length of the barrel is 44 times of 120mm = 5280mm.
  The 120mm/L55 has a barrel length of 55 X 120mm = 6600mm.
  The longer the barrel, the longer the range, because it allows for a longer duration of acceleration in the gun (i.e. force is applied on the projectile for a longer duration).
