theoretically the answer is no, but in reality... maybe in a war time situation everyone is stressed out, then they will do stupid things like what the Americans and Germans were doing... maybe dun need officer tell you you yourself go and torture the POW liao.
Actually how many soldiers dare to disobey order? Maybe reservist dare to, but NSF and regualr rarely dare to do that right? -
times have changed. battling with guns and bayonets maybe outdated liao. now we are talking about missiles - fighting at hundreds of miles away!

under what conditions are such orders given? Shooting POWs illegal? if a POW runs away having identified your position, would you shoot?
How do you decide if they are terrorists/ criminals?
we have do many things for fun, torturing is definitely not.

No. Never shoot surrendered POWs. The British made that mistake against the Japs. Thats why they never knew about the Japanese numbers and logistics issues. Interrogate, interrogate and interrogate! For things like this... A soldier have the right not to follow the orders. Its in the Geneva Convention.

What if the officers threaten you with court martial or firing squad for insubordination to their illegal orders? The illegal orders may also have come from even higher ups, such that your commander don't dare to disobey, and hence order you to carry out the deed.

Like enemy fifth column infiltrated a deadly plague carrier into friendly civilians, and you are ordered to destroy all of them, for your safety and others, you have to do it.
Safety will legally take precedence over the Geneva conventions. -

anyway, no. it is my right to disobey any commands that do points 1, 2, 6 and 7. Unless necessary, 1 and 2 can be carried out. 6 and 7 never. its just not in my moral ability to do so at this time. -

First of all, this is an execution, not a "target practice" as they are too close for practice.Originally posted by Dr Who:

Anyway, disobeying a direct order usually means facing court martial. Of course, in a fair trial, disobeying an order that is proven unlawful is justifiable.
However in most armies, especially the Japs in WW2, Soviets, NKPA in Korean War etc - disobeying a direct order can mean instant death. For example you join the other end of the firing squad in the picture.
They might condone an officer shooting a insurbodinate soldier immediately as they believe that this is the only way to keep the rest of the troops in line.
In these situations, you might not even live long enough for court martial. -
Will you lead a mutiny against a leadership who is coercing you and your fellow troops to commit war crimes under the threat of the firing squad and relieve that superior officer of command and place him under arrest at the risk of injury or death?

some officers are brainless.. and it doesnt mean u have to follow them,
you will just turn urself into another brainless freak whatt..
as much as i hate to say this.
MOST officer are down with ego problem, it's a matter of level of the ego prob.
if u send a platoon of officers to fight the battle. bound to lose, not becoz of their capabilities... but their ego prob. and uncompromising thing.. becoz they can't possibly know more than WOSE. it's a fact.
but i say again, im refering to the majority.. i've seen my share of gd officers. yea.
cheerios to them.
