Nah...the light is fixed there...the lighting is control from the control rm in the sub..unless u r talking about the bollard we used to secure the ropes when we go alongside..Originally posted by Shotgun:You've got me... Are our waters or rather tropical waters salty enough that we need to add weights to our submarine? Understandable though... its after all a migrated submarine.
Haha, pardon us for mistaking a stern light for some top secret sensor or morse code flasher. Most of us not navy trained or even been involved with sailing.
Btw... you mean some poor sailor has to climb out on the surface of the submarine, in the middle of rough seas or bad weather, at night to attach the navigation light?

After the Swede perfected their Stirling AIP, they decided to build a new class AIP SSK which the result is Gotland which is actually based on the Vastergotland plus AIP from the start of production.
Our Vastergotland with AIP upgrades and perhaps more modern system during the upgrades will have similar or perhaps even better performance( depending on the upgrades & becos newer system is available now) than the Gotland.
Other than the older hull, we are really getting a great AIP SSK at relatively low cost.
a Singaporean Swedish-trained, and equipped with a Swedish sub (altho actually not of Gotland class) penetrated the defense of a U.S CVN that the bells really rang over there... for the first time, a submarine stood ready to fire its torpedoes against a US nuclear aircraft carrier.fr gary1910,Senior Member,26 July 2005http://www.sgforums.com/?action=thread_display&thread_id=144001&page=1

LINDEN: With AIP, I can stay submerged for weeks...
HENRY: If you look at our coast, North America, is there any place that you can't go?
LINDEN: No.
HENRY: No place?
Linden then shakes his head.
After ten years of operational service HMS Näcken in 1988 became the first submarine to be equipped with a complete air independent propulsion (AIP) system. The vessel was cut in two and a complete hull section, including the Stirling AIP system, was inserted.
That means the submarine we are get which most probably will have AIP will be larger than the original Swedish submarine without he AIP. But will that post a problem to maneuvorbility especially in the busy, shallow waters littered with wrecks around Singapore, after all the submarine is designed for the Swedish waters and not ours.Originally posted by lionnoisy:Coventional sub needs to be cut into two to convert into AIP.

Singapore
Singapore is well on the way to acquiring a
very sophisticated submarine capability. As is
typical for Singaporean acquisition programs,
they have bought very capable hardware
(Swedish Sjöormen class boats) while
methodically working up the expertise and
doctrine to utilise it effectively. Their fleet will
expand from the current four to six by 2010.
