i saw that too.Originally posted by MohamedF:Anyone got heard real one before? I got heard once in a documentary on arts central that US got one... It fires a direct infrared beam that will fry the target... Claims to be useful to deter incomming shells...
But I can't find on the net leh... =P

Hmmm.... The one is see was mounted on the ground and uses radar to guide the laser to the shell... The got it airborne already..Originally posted by maggot:Air-borne lasers
Using CO lasers...they are huge so need large cooling units
Command and Conquer: General and Zero Hours F22 and tanks all have laser defence systemOriginally posted by ditzy:You can find it in Command and Conquer Red Alert.

Using ground based lasers to fry warheads of missiles. Warheads are generally very delicate stuff, if u can fry it, u may render the weapon ineffective.
I remember I saw the test footage a couple of years ago. It was even on the news.

Oct 11, 2006 (BBC Monitoring via COMTEX) -- In the last few months, the IDF [Israel Defence Forces] has been making the first operational use in the world of a tactical laser cannon system designed to destroy explosive charges and mines.http://www.murdoconline.net/12 0ct 2006.
The system, called THOR, was developed by RAFAEL [Armament Development Authority]. Once the operational testing stage and IDF trials are completed, THOR will be offered for sale abroad. RAFAEL is in talks with US giant General Dynamics on joint production and marketing of the system.
The system will be offered to the US forces operating in Iraq and to other friendly Western armies. RAFAEL's system has been successfully operated by the Engineering Corps in the Har Dov area, performing dozens of tactical trials. In the last few months, the IDF conducted another operational trial of the system in the Gaza Strip, using it to destroy explosive charges laid by the Palestinians on the other side of the border.
The laser cannon is fitted on a fire-control post, which can also be fitted with special identification equipment that is capable of long-range identification of explosive charges and the direction of the laser cannon's fire at them.
According to defence sources, this is the first operational use of a direct laser beam for destructive purposes with technology that brings to mind the laser cannon that is designed to destroy rockets and missiles possessing a range of a few kilometres.
The THOR is designed for very short ranges and is of relatively low strength, so the gap between the operational system and a system that is effective in intercepting katyushas is still a significant one.

i think it would not be able to take down aircraft. however, it might be able to disable the electronics of the aircraft, rendering it pretty useless unless u want a dive bomberOriginally posted by MohamedF:Hmmm.... wonder if the cannon can also take down aircrafts or even fry the inside of a tank?
