World class MBTs like the M-1 and Leo2 were made by countries who had a lot of pior experience with armour and knew what they needed their tanks for, as well as the know-how to do it. They should have aimed first for making stuff like the Korean K-1, which was a less ambitious version of the Abrams.
I don't know, maybe they were aiming to do something like the Japanese Type 90 tank? Which actually costs more per unit then an Abrams.
China is on a new tank project as well, I wonder how that turns out.
China Type99 MBT turn out very well. But suspect high price forces only the elite PLA armour unit to be equipped only(Numbering 180-300). Type96 will be the MBT to replace most Type-59 tanks(1500-2000 and still producing). U can find more news on Sinodefence.. Plenty of pictures of Type 99 in formation of few dozens in exercise with serial numbers on it. SHowing it fully deploy.
