STRV 103 S Tank

Strv 103 is unique in that 105 mm gun is fixed in glacis plate n is aimed in traverse by pivoting vehicle on its tracks n elevation by adjusting hydropneumatic suspension from -10° to +12°, with driver acting as gunner. Armed with auto loaded 105 mm gun firing anti-tank rds (APFS/-DS), HE n smoke rds, empty cartridges cases being auto ejected from rear. It has three 7.62 mm MGs (two parallel with main gun n one on com's cupola). Normal range for 105mm gun is up to 2000 m n rate of fire is 10 rds/min.
Strv 103 weighs 39.7 tonnes n has crew of three: commander, driver(also operating as gunner) n radio operator(also function as driver when tank is going in reverse). Max road speed is 50 kph. On-road n off road ranges are 390 n 150 km respectively.
Strv 103 is equipped with a float-skirt n can be made ready for fording within 30 min. The driver stands on a special platform n steers with reins. After fording, vehicle can be made ready for action again within 10 min.
Strv 103s are fitted with a dozer blade n can be fitted with mineclearing rollers at front of the hull.
Good defensive tank,it carries 50 rds main gun ammo n 3 MGs(enough for anti infantry role) -
This is, in my opinion the ugliest and the most weird looking MBT

When it first appeared in the 60's it was a revolutionary design because of the low profile in the hull-down position. The British army was interested enough to lease a battalion of it for trials but most users soon found the idea impractical- you cannot fire on the move with any accuracy, and to shoot further, you have to apply pneumatic pressure on the suspension in order to raise or lower the front or back of the tank accordingly. Not a lot of flexibility.

Reminds me of the Stugs in WW2... Tank destroyers / assault guns.
The Tank destroyer role today requires a faster and mobile platform with fire and forget ATGMs. Assault guns... leave it to the MBTS lar -

Agree that it would be a superb tank for defense or even attacking straight forward. But utterly useless for a fluid battle or urban combat. -
Not really impractical back during WW2. Those were really cheap platforms with enormous fire powers. Rather than building huge and heavily armored tanks, and loading them with big high velocity guns. They built lower profiled assault guns, that packed the same amount of firepower of a tank, better frontal armor (slope), and Cheaper.
U don't have to have a very heavy vehicle to have a big gun, and u don't have troublesome and expensive turret systems to build and maintain.
Camouflage down an potential avenue of advance in an urban area, and u'd give the enemy a hell of a time trying to kill it. -
at least the ww2 assualt guns could more their guns without traversing.At least a few degrees.the STRV103 cldnt.The gun is mated to the bloody body

Well, advances in mechanical engineering and electronic/computerised control systems could allow the body aim more accurately and responsively today. It reduces the number of mechanical parts required to make the gun move a few degrees. =D

Sturmgeschutz IIISturmgeschutz series proved to be very successful, and served on all fronts as assault guns and tank destroyers in both offensive and defensive mode. Sturmgeschutz III with its low silhouette was a difficult target and a dangerous opponent.
I think they r built based on these....STRV103 is more a defensive than offensive tank(ww2 germans think otherwise)cos if u r attacking then u will be firing on the move more....... Main gun traverse by pivoting vehicle on its tracks n elevation by adjusting hydropneumatic suspension. It carries quite a lot of ammo too....If main gun have more elevation than it will be good for MOUT....Maybe a large RR could be used -
Actually, the gun is not mated to the body, it can be moved for a few degrees.
The assault guns of WW2 were often supported by turreted tanks.
But Sweden at that time used the 'S' tank as its main tank. I can't imagine that the fixed gun on the 'S' tank will be easy to shoot a fast-moving target even by a very highly-trained crew.
It would be especially useless in urban combat where distances are short and threats very close.
And they also cannot fire on the move.
Again this is fine if we're still in WW2 and everyone has to stop to fire.
But every major tank today can fire accurately on the move. That's why I think the 'S' tank will be a real lame duck in a fluid battle. -

to aim the main gun or the co-ax MG, the driver/gunner will have to move the entire tank.
it has a sensitive and responsive suspenssion ssytem for that purpose....
