Underwater assault Rifle

The APS (Avtomat Podvodnyj Spetsialnyj = Special Underwater Assault rifle) was developed during the early 1970s at TSNIITOCHMASH (Central Institute for Precision Machine building) by the team lead by V. Simonov. APS has been in active service with combat divers of the Soviet and Russian Navy since circa 1975.
The APS is designed for special underwater cartridges, which fire 5.66 mm needle-like projectiles 120 mm long. The projectiles are stabilized using a hydrodynamic cavity, generated by the flat point of the projectile. The cartridges use standard 5.45 x 39 cases, sealed from water. The APS itself is a relatively crude, smoothbore arm, with a gas operated, rotating bolt action, fired from an open bolt. Single safety / selector switch is located at the left side of the receiver and allows for single shots and full automatic fire. The gas system features a patented self-adjusting gas valve, which allows the gun to be fired both underwater and in atmosphere. The simple trigger unit allows for single shots and full automatic fire. The rate of fire under water, as well as the effective range, depends on the actual depth. Sights are crude: a non-adjustable open notch rear and post front. The retractable buttstock is made from steel wire. The most complicated thing in the whole design is the feed system, which includes several parts to avoid double and even triple feed with the extremely long projectiles. Unusually deep (front to back) magazines are made from polymer and hold 26 rounds.
It must be noted that while APS could be fired "above the water", it should be done only in the case of emergency. According to the available sources, the expected service life of the APS when fired "in the air" degrades severely, and the effective range is limited only to several tens of meters. So, the APS is useful only under the water, where it is quite efective.

but i watched the myth busters... abt the test shot... they use the 50 cal berret sniper... hahah but theymust fire at a certain angle then can be optimal ma

One test that they did I found quite inconclusive.
It was to rubbish the Hollywood stunt of people being knocked back when hit by small arms fire.
In their tests, with the final one using a pig carcass, there was nearly no movement of the carcass even when hit by a shotgun blast.
I disagreed with the way the test was conducted as they suspended the carcass.
Though I agree that Hollywood sensationalise too much, I do think that a man shot MIGHT be more dramatic as he might react to the shock/pain, loses his balance (being pipedal) etc before falling backwards/forwards. -

They suspended him by his centre of gravity as viewers requested and then they shot him with a .50 cal. rifle. And he merely fell backwards no flying back 6 ft like in Hollywood movies.
I do agree with their conclusion as Newton's 3rd law pretty much busts the myth, "For every action there must be an equal and opposite reaction." -
Speaking of underwater assault rifles...any other countries developed such weapons? What do our own combat divers use?

HK has an underwater pistol.hah but it has like 4 or 6 rounds sealed.1 time use only then must send back to factory for reload haha
anyway if you do get shot i think chances are you will fall in the direction of the shot.Why?because when u get hurt it is a reaction to go toward the injury.As in bring ur body closer to the injury.so if u get shot in the back u'd arch ur back behind .Same with most injuries..... -
reminds me of CS. cos all the weapons in CS can be fired under water. heck, even HE grenade too.

I have seen navy commercials of the combat diver carrying a MP-5 with full gear coming out of water. Does this means MP-5 can be fired in water?

just last week mythbuster revisit the gun underwater test... gun can fire underwater provided there must not be any air in the gun.... correct me if i'm wrong . but i think this is wad i heard

Agreed.... divers generally don't meet enemy divers under water.... U don't send divers to patrol the shoreline to fend off enemy divers... thats like.. err.. nvm.
I love the part where they just crouch below the water level, with their weapons ready. Then when the tide recedes, just a portion of them and their weapons can be seen, while they visually scan the shore.
Apparently, the divers tell me they are practically invisible from the enemy when they do that. -

There is a definite blowback impact upon the firing of most firearms.
There is a strong recoil when you fire a weapon, part of it absorbed by the recoil spring and the other absorbed by your body poised for the recoil action.
However, it is true that Hollywood over-dramatise the being-hit-reaction, no doubt. And bullets passes through most things without any impact force unless they meet something they cannot penetrate.
When we did butt party in the old days, we could barely feel the 5.56 bullets passing through the plywood targets.
The most dramatic photo of a guy being hit was that of a rifleman in the Spanish Civil War. He neither flew forward nor backward. But the impact of the bullet caused him to throw out his arms and fling off his rifle as his knees buckle under him.
