I have read from somewhere that Penang have a U-Boat command station servicing their boats in the far east. There was a U Boat sunk near Penang towards the end of 1944 by British maritime patrol planes operating from Burma.
The U Boats were involved in ferrying rare minerals, gold bullion and secret documents between Japan and Germany. The one sunk off Penang was carrying some kind of mineral ore from Germany to Japan.
