Think after the Flankers are inducted into service, the RMAF aircraft type will be just: (i) Hawks, (ii) Hornets (will be replaced by the Rhino if RMAF decide to procured these), the (iii) Flankers &...(iv) ? the fulcrum was a thumb in the nose to uncle sam for not providing the claws for the hornets. RMAF's hornets are only good for strike purposes rather than air superiority and interception.
so, that's where the fulcrum came in. for interception duty and air superiority. those fulcrums cannot perform strike functions.
not so with the f16s where you could have various models each have different duties.
logistic wise, having different blocks of f16s are better than having different types of aircraft. but rmaf was not in the position to dictate things. see what happened to TNI-AU? -

We gave away our F16A to thais and scrap our skyhawk after extensive upgrading is this also a case of poor planning ... -

Upgrading of RSAF Skyhawk was done is two stages over quite a period of time. First was engine upgrade and second was avionics upgrade. The Skyhawks were with us for quite a while - the life cycle cost must have been pretty low - good value for money. This is quite an achievement considering we received " bare bones " A4s in the beginning & we had about 70 operational aircraft at its peak.They probably have been more than good in their role as "mud movers " - CAS.
Scrapping them was the right move as they are well past their prime and have served their purpose. The " mud movers" job now belongs to the RSAF 's Apache AH64 Ds and perhaps F16s.
I reckon the transitions were well thought out and planned which is difficult to replicate even in some first world air forces - look at the RAF and RAAF. -

the hornets main task is anti ship strike. it cannot handle AMRAAM in its present configuration. it can also perform ground attack / close support when required as shown during the one of the exercise with TNI when the Hawks were canned due to the crash off Kuantan.
however, a few months back it was reported that Boeing got the clearance to supply AMRAAM to a few countries including Malaysia. not sure whether this was part of the carrot for a possible FA/18F deal.

While Malaysia's Hornets at this time are still not AMRAAM-equipped, they are armed with the ubiquitous Sidewinder and the Sparrow. Anyone remember a USN Bug which shot down an Iraqi plane whilst still carrying bombs during Desert Storm?

those sidewinders and sparrows for the rmaf's hornets are more for self defence. and i believe the bug that shot down the iraqi plane was using the AMRAAM. not sidewinder. heck, they can carry AMRAAM on a shoot first basis. why want to use sidewinder? its like carrying a rifle but using a pistol instead. -

the incident was during Desert Storm...AMRAAM was only operational late in the war (its virtually over). IIRC it was not AMRAAM, but either AIM-7 or-9. Besides, the Hornet is basically a swing-role aircraft. saw a MiG29 pic on the ADJ magz with a drag chute and the big print " made in malaysia" ... wow for a while thought since when our neighbour licensed to manufacture MIG 29 ..... sekali it's referring to the drag chute in fine print
