KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has to turn to nuclear power as an alternative source of electricity for its rapidly growing economy, an official from a nuclear agency said.Noramly Muslim, the chairman of the Malaysian Nuclear Licensing Board, said Malaysia would need at least two nuclear reactors, state Bernama news agency reported.
He said nuclear energy was seen as the best alternative to depleting oil and gas, Malaysia's main fuels for power generation.
"To develop a nuclear reactor, we need some 15 years. Indonesia has already started its nuclear program in the 1960s," Noramly said.
He added the government planned on using nuclear energy to generate power after 2020 but that the schedule could be accelerated.
Noramly said that Indonesia and Thailand will be using nuclear energy in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
In July the government indicated that Malaysia could turn to nuclear power to reduce its dependence on oil.
Bernama quoted the deputy vice-chancellor of a Malaysian university, Sukiman Sarmani, as saying scientists in the country were just waiting for the "green light" from the government to jump-start a nuclear program.
"I don't think Malaysia will face opposition from the global community. Our case and Iran's are different. Our uranium enrichment process might be done in another country and then imported," Sukiman said.
"Whether we like it or not, the world would have to depend on nuclear from 2020 onwards until 2070," he said.
Sukiman said the government was also developing technology to harness wind and solar power to produce electricity by 2050 or 2070.
Malaysia is an oil-exporter, but in June Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the era of "cheap oil" was over and that the world faced an energy crisis as emerging economies and developed nations competed for scarce resources.
Malaysia had promoted the use of natural gas to reduce dependence on oil under a fuel diversification policy started in 1981. Coal and hydroelectric power are the other main sources of electricity.

Maybe its time we seriously consider having a nuclear power plant of our own. After all the high oil prices will be dropping anything soon and fossil fuels will be exhausted one day as they are limited. Even oil producing countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia are planning to go nuclear in the future for their energy needs, what more a tiny island without any resources like Singapore?

This will be very unlikely. Remember how our water supply are threatened to be cut by previous Malaysian politicians? I am sure both the Singapore government and its citizens do not want such scenarios to happen again. It will not make any sense for us to be finally independent on our water supply only to get ourselves dependent on them for energy needs. -
younger generation of singaporean must not have the mindset of buying anything from this neighbour at national level especially if these things mean life and death like water or power. we should have learnt our lesson from our water and otc stock dealings with this country. They bascially can ignore the agreement or any kind of law when they decide to play dirty... something they always do. Because no one on earth will stop them unless you wana have a war with them which is unlikely. So learning that SGX is gona tie up with them somehow or their businesssman propose what bullet train nonsense really worries me if we acccidentally commit for some reasons. enough is enough.

Have it ever occur to you that Singapore, being a tiny country cannot afford the risks of having a nuclear meltdown like a larger country because of our scarcity of land. The question is do we want to risk having a collapse of the economy upon a meltdown vs what we could gain from it. If Malaysia really builds a Nuclear Plant, I am seriously going to consider migrating to another country or at the very least stay as far away from the plant as possible.
Because I can predict (actually, we all know) exactly what kind of people or so-called professionals that they are going to put there in charged of the plant. And I have ZERO confidence in them.
They will have a bunch of incompetent and yet arrogant engineers. Most of them will have 3rd-class bachelor degrees from unheard-of overseas universities that try hard to make them graduate so that the Malaysian government is happy enough to keep sending young students to the same universities year after year. -

They can practise both meritocracy as well as special priviledges for bumis at the same time while not forgoing progress and efficiency. Singapore is one such example. I know for sure that Singaporean Malays can have free education for as far as they can go in government schools. Although to say that Singapore is purely based on meritocracy is not 100% true but at least most can agree that our system works,even for a young tiny city state with no natural resources. -
i'll move out of singapore if malaysia dose that
