Description
These fast warships provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities, and can operate independently or as part of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious ready groups, and underway replenishment groups.
Features
Destroyers and guided missile destroyers operate in support of carrier battle groups, surface action groups, amphibious groups and replenishment groups. Destroyers primarily perform anti-submarine warfare duty while guided missile destroyers are multi-mission [Anti-Air Warfare (AAW), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), and Anti-Surface Warfare (ASUW)] surface combatants. The addition of the Mk-41 Vertical Launch System or Tomahawk Armored Box Launchers (ABLs) to many Spruance-class destroyers has greatly expanded the role of the destroyer in strike warfare.
3.Question--If our frigate can deal with various threats in all dimensions of naval warfare of surface, air and underwater,can we classify it as destroyer?
The frigates will be equipped with advanced state-of-the-art combat capabilities allowing them to perform a wide spectrum of missions and to deal with various threats in all dimensions of naval warfare ¨C surface, air and underwater.
Surveillance is provided by the Thales Herakles Multi-function Radar (MFR). As a three-dimensional search and fire control radar, the MFR is able to perform all round, long range air and surface surveillance, while simultaneously controlling weapons against hostile targets. The MFR is integrated with the Aster Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system. Supplied by MBDA2, the Aster SAM System is designed to meet the air defence needs of the frigate against aircraft and sea skimming anti-ship missiles. The Aster is a two-stage missile with a powerful thrust and aerodynamic control to enable high agility and manoeuvrability.
The Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capability of the frigate is provided by the EDO3 Active Low Frequency Towed Sonar (ALOFTS) system and the Eurotorp A244S torpedo. The Active Low Frequency Towed Sonar system provides the ship with long range underwater detection and classification capabilities, while the A244 lightweight torpedo is designed to counter submarine threats operating in the littorals.
The frigates will also be equipped with the Harpoon anti-ship surface missile system and the OTO Melara 76mm naval gun. Both systems are currently in service onboard other RSN ships. The Integrated Communications System (ICS) is provided by CET of Singapore Technologies Electronics.

The Royal Navy's Broadsword-class frigates are bigger than some destroyers.
Anyway, there is also some politics and psychology involved. Frigates won't sound so threatening to our neighbours as destroyers. What matters in the end is the capability of the ship and its crew, not the classification. -

I can't imagine a destroyer with ONE naval gun ... -

I doubt so, I think different countries have different ways to refer to a particular class of warship. It is usually a diplomatic move. For example PRC LUDA 4 type warship 051type carries 8Ashm, 16air defence missile, 2naval guns, 3anti-sub torps..... like dat they are also classified as destroyer. Just like the Soviets dun like to call their carrier as carrier but things like aircraft enabled cruisers.

not necessary everytime they must threaten us first then we can threaten them ... anyway the troublemaker that always still up emotion problem already self-destruct

i think the british classify their warships according to role, with those with an primary anti air role called destroyers, and those with a primary anti submarine role called frigates.
That said, the americans classify theirs by displacement, with the FFGs displacing up to 3000 tons, the DDGs displacing up to 7000 tons and the CGs displacing up to 12000 tons. -

In the USN, the FFs are meant to be escort ships, as such, they are smaller and slower and therefore "cheaper" compared to the DDs which are meant to be do be escorts for CBGs.
in the RN, frigates are ASW platform and destroyers and AA platforms.
But in most countries, it is a matter of size.... even the RAN only have frigates and no destroyers if I am not wrong.
