That is a very good question. I guess since that they are indirectly supporting the war effort they may not be called up. But as for who to take over their duties in their reservist unit, maybe those units with lots of ST employees and people working for government-linked companies providing support for SAF will be activated the last.Originally posted by insouciant:Actually I always wondered...

This question also brings about the problem of other ST employees such as non-NSmen, PR and foreigners. They being civilians working for ST, especially the PRs and foreigners, can we count on their support in times of war? An example will be the aunties,uncles and bangala working for SFI, when war broke out will they carry on working to provide us with hot meals or will they hide in bomb shelters(for locals) and leave home(for foreign workers)? -

there were ,i assume half,435000 male born in 20 years,
assume 90 % went for NS,there would be 391,000 operationally ready national service. -

but they still serve NS and is in no way different from the rest of us other then the color of their IC.
frankly... i was quite surprised by the number of PR in my unit... maybe my unit is sweep floor one?

So much men also no use. Of 1st importance is air superiority. If we have that, we have won a large part of the battle. Next comes to naval capabilities for open sea lanes.
But if you consider ICBMs, then equation changes. This is why Singapore is so quick to liase with N. Korea when evidence of the potential danger came about. You think the Singapore goverment invited the N. Korea foreign minister just for talk-cock-sing-song. Surely they must have made some contingent offer on table for mutual non-agression.
Manpower is important, but this thread seemed to have overemphasized on that. However, it is true with such a substantial army (reserve or not) and having the adequate equipment, countries (esp around the region) will not only think twice but thrice before taking any action. -

Recall 1942 Jap occupation. Isn't there a group of locals who betrayed their countrymen to work for the Japs.. I think their objective was also to save themselves first. Actually a lot of locals served the japanese some even as armed personnels in the Imperial Army.
