does any of us here seriously think the SG government is generous enough to reveal its strength? the 480K just dropped to 280K within a day. that ought to reveal something. -

Well, could SAF equipped all of them?
First thing , SAF in the early days was still developing and only fully equipped the frontline Div i.e. 3,6, 9 Div etc, the others who were not in combat vocation during NSF days were ususally posted into PDF formations.
PDF formations could easily form at least 3 Divs or more( in term of number).
Then PDF formations did not go thru much serious training and I doubt that SAF could equip all these NS men then.
But things started to change I think in the mid-80s, the factors could be:
1) SG is getting richer becos of growing economy, now SAF could afford to equip more NS men.
2) SG arms industry is matured enough to produce almost all equipment needed for any Infantry Bn.
3) In the 80s, SAF was getting new weapons for the frontline Div , thus there were surplus of older weapons that could be channelled to PDF formations.
By the early 90s, PDF formations already have more than 10 Bde of light infantry , mainly consist from Service vocation NSF converted into infantry NS men, combat trained NSF from schools,TC etc, and older infantry/Guards units.
Their roles is different from the frontline Div and phyical demand is lesser but they are all fully equpped with all the neccessary infantry weapons plus support with armour etc.( PDF have armour too!!!) And go thru 13 years( 10 years now) NS training cycle too.
PDF formations lack of most heavy equipment ( arty , more armour etc) but that I believe it is either changed by now or in the future.( below is my viewpoints)
The reason is that SAF has more surplus weapons now than ever, M68/71/114 howizters, M113 APC?, SM1 in the future etc.
You may ask, PDF is not arty and armour trained , who will be manning them???
Those older armour/arty units or MR units will be manning them.
So could SAF equipped all of 320K , it is a definitely YES!!!
In fact, I think our 2nd line PDF formations will be better armed than our northern friend!!!!! -

Actually, there is only one PDF "division" (2PDF) left. They are very well equiped. And honestly, they are just as well trained as the other divisions and the demands on them is just as high as the other divisions. Even 6 SIR is now a part of 2 PDF. Numbers of soldiers mean nothing, it is the number of equipment plus type of equipment that is need to be closely guarded!!!
And most nations do not closely guard the number of personnel and officially announce them from time to time especially in defence budget.
BTW 320K does not means a lot in SEA, do you know that??? -

Becos of our large qty of NS men, some of our northern friends thought that the bulk of our NS men are not fully trained and euipped, how wrong they are!!!!!
They assume that so to make them feel better becos of their small army!!!
