  I meant not the buffer spring, but the tube which holds the buffer spring.Sorry for not makin it clear at the beginning.

  It just so happens that I'm building an AR15 with a 20" barrel for a good friend this weekend, so I took the opportunity to snap a couple of pictures of the buttstock components. I do not remember if these are similar to those in the M16S1 (after all, I did my NS in the mid-80s ); perhaps someone can chime in and comment:
  
  
  
  The buffer tube is screwed onto the rear of the lower receiver. The flat spots at the rear are to accommodate a 3/4" wrench used to tighten the tube onto the receiver, or to remove it:

  If I remeber, the M16S1 have a shorter buttstock than the A2 buttstopck that you have photographed. they do not use that spacer..
  
  since I am not that big size, usually for my full size M16, I like to mount the A1 buttostock over the A2 becasue its much shorter!
