What if you can only pick one. You don't know where you are gonna end up next. A desert in Texas, or a jungle in South America. Basically, SHTF and you can only grab one assault rifle and you don't know how long you have to stick with this choice and you have no control over the climate you'd be surviving/operating in.Originally posted by davechng:Har har! If I have to be in desert or harsh terrain, mostl probably a AK74 M with Elcan 552 or AImpoint 3!
But for all other close range CQB type actions, I would go with a SIG551. Eotech 552 for close range! for extended range ELcan!.... I would chnage this option if I get to play more on a HK M416 or the piston based M16 ... on all I still like the ergonomics of the M16
FOr mission needing longer range engagement, a Inch PAttern L1A1 wuth some modifications to my liking! ( I would put in the bolt hold open device on the last round like the metric, the full auto hammer and sear catch for FA operation .. have learn to control that beast well now ) and bring lots of Bren :L4 magazines! maybe mount a ELcan scope on it
As for SAW, unless U100 come with a belt fed, I will still go with a M249 or te new HK SAW! no can do for me on a SAW with mediocre feeding system ! nothing beats a belt fed for continuious supressive fire.
If 30 caliber is needed ... probbably the new M248 ... the big brother of M249! ..
Pistols, will be my trusty GLock 35 in 40 caliber!

I am not really qualitfied to answer as I only know the M16 all my life. I'll still definitely pick that as the "devil I know". -

Range / accuracy might be affected. But thing is, until they fix the stupid quadrant sight, accuracy even on the current M16/M203 is not exactly wonderful at long range.
I got better results using the darn leaf sight than the quandrant sight. -
I think like everything else, practise makes perfect.
Problem is that among all the small arms, M203 firing gets the least practise cos you got to wait till go live firing or grenade range.
I borrowed a M203 to fire curry powder once and the round landed in line with target but about 50m short. Target was at 300m.
Can't remember which sight I used. -
The problem with the quadrant sight is that you often have to aim off which obviously makes accuracy an issue.
Sure, practice makes perfect, but then why bother having the quadrant sight then? I can practice with the leaf sight till I get really accurate results with it too.
This way can do away with a contraption that makes the rifle harder to carry by hand, pokes you in the back when you sling it the "wrong" way and causes you to sign 1206 if you haven't taken extra care with its parts. -

Well, in that case I pick the SIG-551 rifle.
As for the M203, the leaf sight is so much faster and it is farely accurate to 200 m! for 300 m target I would go with the quadrant sight! !

Interesting. I used to like the SIG-550 series a lot especially with all the rave reviews etc. But then I looked closely at the pictures and saw that the mag release is the AK-type. Do you have a SIG-551 in your arsenal? I'm sure you have fired one...
What are some of the great things about the 551? -
YEs! SIG 551 uses AK type mag release ! its all in the training! infact it gives a positive lock on this kind of mag release ... thus we don;t have the problem like our M16 where it drops or did not sit properly! which is why we need a tap after each mag insert.
Yes it is loosly AK design ( thus the reliability) but the fit , craftsman and tolerance makes the accuracy!
The overall quality and make of the rifle is phenominal! non assualt rifle I have seeen is so well made ... its made like a swiss watch! .. its sight system is superiroor to our M16, accuracy is awesome....., reliability ( piston base) is very good, mag design is much more superior, you can clip them together, don;t jam easily like out cheaply made M16 mags!, sturdy and feel and very rugged! winter trigger design that ease usage in winter conditions!, it is pretty IMHO
the only downside of the SIG is , its EXPENSIVE, does not have adjustable buttstock length to ease body armour and other SBO device , a little heavier than our M4. Ergonomics is not as good as the M4.
I can go on! but you get what I mean! overall, it is all rounder type Assualt rifle.
maybe a new HK made M416 or some piston based M4 might change my mind in future!
