1.5 Mach isn't fast enough for you?Originally posted by touchstone_2000:I am tempted to reply but this going off thread. So I will keep it really short.
F-5E as an intercepter? It is too slow.
Maybe he wanted the speed to be at Mach 3 like the SR71 Blackbird...Originally posted by insouciant:1.5 Mach isn't fast enough for you?
Most plans don't break the sound barrier during most flights, and that includes combat ops, as it guzzles too much fuel.
At subsonic, the F5E/F more than holds its own in a dogfight.
Besides in peacetime, most of the interceptions is for straying Cessnas and the like. No need for a interceptor to go supersonic.
think about it lah, the A-4s used to win all the dogfights, even against the F-16s. So that tells alot.Originally posted by insouciant:1.5 Mach isn't fast enough for you?

However, speed is always most people that would linked with alongside with dogfights... Me remembered an article that me had read before from Jane's Defence about Israelian Air Force having a dogfight simulation using their A4 Skyhawks against F16 Viper and Skyhawks won the dogfight for interception scenario... The win rate was about 5:2...Originally posted by CenturionMBT:think about it lah, the A-4s used to win all the dogfights, even against the F-16s. So that tells alot.
But putting a MIG29 against F16, MIG29 outperformed the F16 in the various areas of combat radius efficiency, G-Force handling, multi-arrayed targetting...Originally posted by MobyDog:A4 - nimble .. mah
F-16 - multi-role, longer range, heavier payload .. mah
and comes down to it... F-16 can have a more powerful radar for WVR and BVR interception.. though BVR is not really combat proven enough.
Put a Mig-21 against a F-16 in WVR will probably have the same results.-- nimble.
Because it's in the best interest of the SAF to continually update its equipment and doctrine to changing times.Originally posted by sand king:may i ask, what i so urgent about weapons? lol no war.
Cos in dogfighting you hardly use your afterburners. You use agility. And at high speeds, you are not agile.Originally posted by dork3d:However, speed is always most people that would linked with alongside with dogfights... Not all are weapons but interestingOriginally posted by touchstone_2000:New stuff:
1. Better protection for general infantry transport. The tonners and land-rovers have zero ballistic protection. M113s and Bionix are for the Armour Infantry.
2. ASM missiles, probably as a follow on to the F-15 order.
3. Anti-radiation missiles. Either HARM or ALARM. We might even have them, but not announced.
4. A way of retreiving wounded personnel in the open or FIBUA.
waaa.... as i read down the list.. my saliver suddenly wells up and starts dripping all over my keyboard....Originally posted by tankee1981:1. SM1 need to be replaced by something like the XM8

3. Current MCV to be replaced by Swedish Visby class
4. C-130H to be replaced by C-130J or A400(better capability)

I think this is just a transition phase. Agreed on light utility helicopters. Not all clearance can take a SP.Originally posted by Fatum:we just need two things right now
1.) more choppers, getting rid of the hueys and replacing the gap with chinnoks was not quite a solution I think .... they are in different weight classes, I don't think the need for a light utility chopper have gone away ...
2.) rationalize the weapons in the standard infantry section, magazines used to be interchangeable among the saw and M-16s, not so with the SAR 21 mix ..... and it gets silly when you factor in the M203 gunners ... the army got rid of 105mm light guns and developed the pageasus to standardize to 155mm ammo, but it seems to be taking a step backwards when it comes to the infantry chaps
