This is true, the original AP rounds fail to penetrate the T-54/55 armour during tests. Therefore Singapore develop the APFSDS round which have much better penetration. It have such high recoil due to the great velocity that the SM1 can hardly take it since its not originally designed to fire such high velocity ammunition.
I don't think it is a good idea to reveal tactics for the SM1 crew against MBTs but i have to say that the venerable SM1, is not totally helpless against MBTs. It is after all used to provide additional fire support for the Ultras and BX in a ABG. We have other assets such as the Longbow Apaches for the MBTs.
