Pacific Command OPLAN 5077-04, as it is currently known, includes air, naval, ground/amphibious, and missile defense forces and "excursions" to defend Taiwan.Options include maritime intercept operations in the Taiwan straits, attacks on Chinese targets on the mainland, information warfare and "non-kinetic" options, even the potential use of American nuclear weapons. -

Most probably not because the US will not want to be nuked by PRC as well while protecting Taiwan in an actual conflict and risk escalating into a all out nuclear war. Why they maintain that they will come to the aid of Taiwan is because they wanted to maintain the status quo between PRC and Taiwan which is beneficial to regional stability and consequently trade for all 3 sides.

of course their version of maintain status quo means the continued stalemate. both sides stay too distracted with each other and will not be able to disturb the great empire.

Once N. Korea has nukes => S Korea will be compiled to have nukes herself => with nuclear China + nuclear N+S Korea next door, Japan will have nukes to maintain nuclear equality => with a nuclear N Asia & using N Korea's (+Iran's) logic of having nukes for self-defence, Taiwan will develop nukes herself to deter China's agressive stance. And with that => Taiwan can be INDEPENDENT! YES! -
