it is normal to insert your Magazine onto the AK since my practice at home is to have my weapon clear! unless it is my bedside gun... all those weapons U see are clear! its all in the training and mindset.. I do treat all weapons to be loaded whenever I handle one....
HEng.... that you see is an all original British BSA L1A1 inch pattern.. ( a very rare commoditiy in the US since there is almost none of the original L1A1 rifle came into the US! ) Lucky to have got one !!!,. to be frank and maybe I am bias, the INch FAL is better than metric in many ways, it has a larger selector, bigger mag release button, has sand cuts in the bolt carrier to ease dirt and sand, nicer flash hider and much more comfortable furniture .... metric's only advantage is the bolt hold open on last round and better back sights! Oh! almost forget! Inch SLR can shoot with both metric and inch mags ! but metric will only take metric mags!
Currently there are lots of FAL parts kit in the US ( from Germany, Austria, Brazil, Aussie and Brits) where you can buy a US made receiver and built them all up!however Metric FAL are easier to built since there are metric receivers but inch receivers are very rare and requires more fitting to get it to work.
Here is a Austrian STG-58 metric FAL built on a US receiver!

Yes the one you saw is a British SLR.. I use to have the original FN FAL .. have since sold it for a big profit. At one time I actually saw some SLR parts kit from Australia that was issued to SIngapore ... and was stripped and sold as parts kit in the US.
If you like the metric FAL! you can easily get ametric FAL parts kit, buy a receiver and have it built ... with proper tools ! 20 minutes is all it takes for a FAL. and the whole rifle would not cost you more than $500!
I guess its a preference thing,,, Metric FAL is very nice also! I will take any FAL! and for now! accesories, parts and magazines are cheap and plentiful!

During recruit the instructors demonstrated a SLR but it is the original version with wooden furniture - looks like a skinny FN MAG : ) Didn't like the wood as much as the black plastic on the British version - which is my favourite. Much like the one Dave has. -

While I speak pretty kilat Singlish myself, I haven't yet learnt how to write in Singlish. But this post from Avante is the first one I've seen where, if this were a Singlish writing exam, I would award it "hundred 'pon hundred" points. This is genuine stuff.

Heng! I felt that G3 although a good system, the delay roller block system makes the gun kicks like a SOB!! ,seriiously, same load on a G3 will kick th lights out of you compared with the FAL and M14. also, the ergonomics of the G3 needs some critisism.. selector , cocking handle and all that needs some getting use to! and also if you have a fully loaded mag! it is hard load the mag to the rifle .. you have to change the way you use weapons, those M16 user will hate this ! say you have an empty mags, you remove the mag, charge the cocking handle to the rear, than insert the mag! if you do it the M16 way of inseerting a full mag on the G3, you will have some trouble somtime to lock the mag in place.
Also! G3 does not hold bolt open on last round, after last shot! tick! you have to change mag! no ease spring like the M16 or FAL!
Advantage of the G3 is that it is cheaper to produce because it uses roll steel instead of the milled receiver of the FAL.. better iron sights... looks really kool!

The last but most annoying part for me about G3 is .... how dirty it is after firing ! It takes quite some effort to clean the G3, MP5, HK33 type weapon becasue of the gas blowing back to the bolt and bolt carrier thru the delay roller block system.
However, it is much more reliable than the FAL! hands down ! and much more accurate in terms of MOA accuracy becasue I guess the G3 has a floating barrel !!

The Israelis, who never complain much about their weapons (cos they had so little of it in the early days) - had much to complain against the FN FAL.
After fighting one or two wars with it - Six Day War & Yom Kippur? - they replaced it with something... Galil or M-16 I dunno.
They said that it was a good weapon but one that doesn't function in the sandy desert. Prone to jamming in the sandy environment.
They had a lot off respect for the AK the Arabs used - whom they said worked, no matter what you do to it. That's why they copied the AK in the Galil.
I love the FN FAL cause it is so sleek and beautiful. Which version, if any, of the FN FAL can fire full auto - I mean the rifle, not the LMG version.
I read a book that said in the Aussies in Vietnam used to jam matchsticks into some part of the trigger or sear and that'll cause their FN FAL to be able to fire full auto. This is illegal and they admit that it was a waste of ammo cos you'll hit nothing. But they said that in the jungle you can't see you enemies anyway. And a full auto burst from a 7.62 FN FAL sometimes had the effect of disheartening the VC.
Dave you should try sticking matchsticks into your FN FAL and see what happens! -

U are right! the Isreali had so much problem with the metric FAL becasue the bolt did not have the sand cut to give way to the sand and grit ! .. As I have stated, FAL is not the most reliable ... in differnt weather we have to mess with the gas port to cycle the rifle better.. Also, in FA firing on the FAL, I have to switch the gas port to give it the extra ummmph. to cycle correctly...
If I have to fight in the sand box ! U bet your ass I will have an AK or a Galil!
Yes! all Inch rifles , the commonweath rifle , they took out the sear catch.... and the change out the hammer so the rifle will ONLY shoot semi auto! the matchstick trick will do !or you can simply slap a metric lower receiver ! and warlah!... ALL PROblem solve!
Anyway! Full auto FAL! dang! cannot control my friend....

But the Brit FN FAL - or L1A1 - SLR you got there is a beautiful thing. It's a work of art. Any modern assault rifle you put next to it will just look utilitarian.

Yes you are right. I am a big fan of the Inch pattern L1A1.. .. Always liked the long flashhider ... got me the Pattern 58 webbing to go with it... besides, the L1A1 will take the 30 rd Bren Mags ( the late 7.62 Bren )

Is that what you have in the pic? I ouldn't see clearly, I thought it was 2 mags taped togerther.
A 30-round mag of 7.62 must be heavy.

You are right, it is the L4A4 30 rd Bren Magazine... it is heavy with 30 rds of 7.62x51 NATO! I guess thats why we go withthe 5.56!! but well worth it since it fits the L1A1. COntrollablity of 308 cartridge is not very good in Fun mode!
I bought bunch of the L4 mags and I have heard that you can actually convert the L4 mags to fit the metric guns!
YEs! I do wear ear plugs !I do not like those ecternal big muffle becasue it gets in the way when firing rifle! Great for go to the range type thing ! but not good in real life situation.

I have seen pics of Australians with SLR in Vietnam with a hi-cap mag of 2x 20 round mags welded together to form one long mag. Too bad they didn't have any Bren 30-round mags on hand. But I think they use the original FN FAL version with the wooden furniture - metric or inch?
This is a ARS "rebuilt" weapon ... Aussie L1A1. Very like the one I saw during NS.

the ARS rifle looks like it uses a Type 3 receiver and as you know these are probably the Brazillian made Imbel receiver that can be mated to the Inch pattern rifle. I have one rifle built with British kits with the setup like the photo.. it works great but I do prefer the Type 1 over the Type 3 receiver.
The rifle kit is defeintly INch rifle...
If you want to be proper or anal about being correct, can go with a Type 1 Inch( with lightning cuts) reciver by Entreprise Arms! they have inch pattern receiver but their Quality control is a hit and miss deal.

Funny that another thread mentions USNS Mercy. I saw Mercy's sister ship, Comfort, near Baltimore during the 65 mile drive back. Took a quick pic thanks to slow traffic but the ship was about a mile away.... someone should invent hands free kit for cameras.

dunno if any of u here are into anime, but the FN FAL appears in Spriggan, used mostly by the ARCAM troops. Funnily enuf the US Machine Corps used the Beretta M12S.
