SINGAPORE: A Singapore navy officer has topped his training class in Britain and given the prestigious "Admiralty Binoculars" award.2.
First Lieutenant Chew Chun Cheong received the award today from British High Commissioner to Singapore Alan Collins.
The 21 year old scored the highest marks from among 93 international students undertaking a one-year navy training course at the Britannia Naval College in Dathmouth and named top International Young Officer of 2005.
This made him the third Singaporean to have received the award.
Two other Singaporeans had received the award - one in 2000 and the other in 2004.
Chew, who is currently doing his Biological Sciences studies at the Nanyang Technological University, will serve in the navy after he graduates.
"I am overwhelmed and am very happy to receive this award. Initially when I went over I only had in my mind my training and interact with other young officers from all over the world. So with this award it also give me an additional factor that I will be more confident with myself, so I will be able to do serve better in the RSN," said LTA Chew. - CNA /dt
The Admiralty Binoculars is awarded each year to the international officer who achieves the highest marks in all aspects of naval training and displays academic excellence, together with outstanding leadership.
Only one award is given out every year and the successful nominee is chosen personally by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.
This is the second consecutive year that a Singaporean naval officer has been awarded this accolade.
Past award winners include Head of Naval Operations, RADM Chew Men Leong, who received the award in 1987.
