Malaysia Home-grown armoured vehicle

Well, I've never liked wheeled armoured vehicles, to be frank. They suffer from higher ground pressure compared to tracked vehicles. This makes them more likely to sink in soft soil and set off pressure-detonated mines.
Using four wheels instead of six will only lead to even higher ground pressure for the same carrying load. I never liked the Stryker, I'm a tad suspicious of our own Terrex, and I sure as heck don't like this vehicle, either. -
It is no secret that the armed forces of Malaysia is a cash cow for Umno and purchases are made not for national operational needs but to line some people's pockets.
With so much defence money siphoned off and bungled defense projects, Malaysia has nothing but a scrawny military force.
National planning in Malaysia is haphazard. Well thought out strategies are absent. Haste is the order of the day and we see the wastage that resulted there.
All round, hidden agendas are prevalent. Just dig up the link between the politicians and the contractors awarded these mega-projects.

Some might wonder why we invest so much in the R&D into the Terrex, when there are already proven platforms out there that are as good if not better. Sound familiar, people?
No no..it becomes an issue because they could not afford it and we could; relatively speaking. So, it would be better that the MAF buy off the shelf. I would`nt be surprised if it is another by-product of the Mahathir era.
At any rate, I suppose they would have gotten thier technology spin-off(however impressive or not?) but do they really gain in the end? -

buy one from the superpowers and improve on it. it wont cost that much. -

Hmm........ Seems to notice there are some opening at the sides of the trucks. Maybe those are firing ports? BTW, does ani one here have detailed info on the military tech products the northern chaps invented or license copy?

Malaysia Eyes ASEAN, Middle East with Homegrown Armored Vehicle

A Malaysian firm launched the countryÂ’s first homegrown light armored vehicle April 24, with plans to export the fighting machine to Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
The Deftech AV4 is designed and built by Deftech, a wholly-owned subsidiary of conglomerate DRB-HICOM Bhd, which supplies vehicles to the Malaysian armed forces.
DeftechÂ’s marketing chief Godfrey Chang said the diesel-powered armored vehicle with a maximum speed of 110 kilometers (69 miles) per hour was built with the help of foreign partners.
”It is a purely Malaysian product with some foreign expertise in areas such as communications, weapons and engine,” he told reporters at a defense exhibition outside the capital Kuala Lumpur.
”We are looking to sell the vehicle to the Malaysian army, Southeast Asian countries and the Middle East,” he said.
Chang said that a demonstration for the Malaysian military would be conducted next month at the military training school in Port Dickson south of Kuala Lumpur.
Some 560 companies including BAE Systems Plc. from Britain, Sukhoi Co. from Russia and Thales Group from France are participating in the four-day military show.

Firing ports have pros and cons. The obvious advantage is of course the extra volume of small-arms supporting fire from the vehicle.
At the same time, though, the firing ports are some of the most vulnerable parts of the vehicle's armour, maing it easier for anti-tank weapons to penetrate. -

Hmmm..... did ani one notice the seat capacity of the vehicle is like very low. onli 4 spaces. I was thinking on the line that maybe Malaysia accquire those vehicles in respond to Singapore's producing more artillery types and things like the primus. Thus perhaps the peace keeping thing is like a smoke screen, instead the real reason is that they want to give their troops more protection.

Don't think so. The armour of this vehicle doesn't look very thick. My thinking is that these vehicles are made for recon purposes. Lots of glass windows for visual recon, and you can see the amount of hardware inside - possibly for heat-sensing, radar-scanning and nightvision equipment.
Besides, as you pointed out, it can't seat a lot of people. So I guess it's enough for a recon team but not for a full section of men. -
that looks like the forward compartment.Maybe for the commander and some specs. So assuming 4 in the forward compartment *driver included* and assuming there is space for 6 more u can seat almost a whole section in there. Doesnt look to bad a vehicle. Should be a troop transport vehicle the likes of the hummer or the jeep or land rovers.

juz 2 cents of my opinion...instead of having sum1 to man the 50 cal. whilebeing exposed directly to enemy fire. There is a system developed n now being tested n implemented by US know as CROWS where the operator can fire the weapon from down below without exposing himself....In my humble opinion, it would b quite excellent if we acn implement dis CROWS system from US into our existing IFV, MBT's or armoured Troop carrying vehicles as dis saves lives -

Excellent pics. Looks more like a Land Rover replacement than a APC.
Something SAF is deeply lacking. With some chickenwire, looks safe enough to drive through Halliwal Market. -
ItÂ’s a wheeled light armoured vehicle. Simple in design, using commercially available automotive components (should not have cost so much in development).
It provides a protective transport alternative to seating in soft skin vehicles like 3 tonners. Possible roles are basic APC for infantry, internal security and weapons platforms. Seats 4 on each side (total 8 troops), plus a driver in the front. Armoured against 7.62mm rounds and artillery fragments. -

Thirteen MOUs, Agreements Signed At DSA 2006 Today
PETALING JAYA, April 26 (Bernama) -- A total of thirteen defence memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and agreements were sealed between local companies and their foreign counterparts at the Defence Services Asia 2006 exhibition and conference here Wednesday.
Among the biggest MOUs and agreements signed involved Airod Sdn Bhd (Airod) and DRB-HICOM Bhd's wholly-owned subsidiary, Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd (DefTech).
DefTech, the main supplier of defence vehicles to the Malaysian Armed Forces, signed strategic collaborations with five foreign partners for the supply of field vehicles, weapon systems, spare parts and technology transfer to the local defence industry.
The first agreement was signed with MOWAG GmbH of Switzerland for the supply of its "Piranha" family of armoured-wheeled vehicles (AWVs), to appoint DefTech its local industrial partner for promotional and marketing activities, locally integrate and ultimately produce the AWVs, transfer of technology and after-sales support in Malaysia.
The second agreement, with Ruag Land Systems of Swizerland, is for the marketing, promotion and local assembly of the Ruag Land's 120mm mortar systems.
The company also signed an agreement with Thales Communications of France to collaborate on promotion and integration of Thales vehicle communication and electronic systems for DefTech's products.
Another agreement with FN-Herstal of Belgium is to collaborate on promotion and integration of FN-Herstal weapon systems with DefTech's products.
The last agreement was with FNSS Defence Systems of Turkey for the supply of spare parts and technical services for the Adnan ACV300 armoured infantry fighting vehicles that are in service with the Malaysian Army.
Airod signed two agreements - technical services and basic ordering - with Pilatus Switzerland for support of the Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF) PC-7 MK I and MK II aircraft.
The agreements were sealed following the signing of letter of intent between the Malaysian Government and Pilatus last December to purchase nine additional PC-7 MK II to meet RMAF's requirement for training aircraft.
Airod has been providing comprehensive maintenance, repair and overhaul services to RMAF's fleet of PC-7 MK I aircraft since 1997 and PC-7 MK II since 2001.
The signing of the agreements with Pilatus strengthens Airod's reputation as the preferred choice for aircraft maintenance in the country.
Other agreements include:
CASS Technology Sdn Bhd and United Arab Emirates-based TagStone to explore opportunities in integrated radio frequency identification technology solution for the intelligent weapon control system in UAE; and,
The collaboration between Satang Jaya Sdn Bhd and South Africa-based Denel (Pty) Ltd's optronics division to establish a maintenance and repair facility to handle warranty and after-sales services for defence observation and surveillance systems.
Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Zainal Abidin Zin and ministry's Secretary-General Tan Sri Subhan Jasmon witnessed the signing ceremony.

the vehicle looks quite nice though. well....strong or not... tat questions remain till we see the fire power. but over all...it it does look good.

It is certainly a light armoured vehicle for mainly recon n troop transport.
