In the face of evolving threats, I would think that having an army still makes common sense than not having one or depending on UN or your allies.. -

Look at the US , blatently ignoring the UN and the UN seems to be unable to do anything abt it

U cant depend on e UN for everything , when US attack Iraq e UN say no but wat happens , US has e biggest say in UN n they will only help only if it benefit them n most nation in e UN dun want 2 offend US.

if you have nothing to lose, you dun need anyone to guard "nothing".
if you need to guard something, you can use your own guard.
Or you can have some other party to guard you, provided this party can be trusted.
Like in HK, before 1997, some of the british army stay there, even its not really needed.
After 1997, the chinese army take over the job.
The british "borrowed" HK for a time limit under agreement, so China wont attack HK to take it back, for Taiwan, it's not under agreement for Guo Min Dang to stay in taiwan and declare Taiwan as a country, so they need an army in case china attack them to take it back. -
got a simple observation: all countries have actually stated that their army is for "defense purposes"
by looking around, we know which countries are the biggest liars
and that there exists a NEED for armies, shows that no one trusts anyone... -
manaco has no army,neither does san marino i think. Liechtenstien(spelling?) might not have one either.I think lexumberg(that little kingdom near germany,france and belgium) doesnt have one either?

It is necessary to have an army or else someone will come and occupy your territory. This has happened to India. When India got independence Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime minister of India said "Scrap the army, the police will be able to maintain law and order". His belief was that only the western nations (like Britain) will be interested in land others are all peace loving people. He realised his mistake which cost India a large amount of Land.
Maldives, Mauritius, Bhutan and Nepal are friendly to India. India is responsible for the defence of this nations. Even Bangaldesh was born with India's help.
