Sounds awful.... but I can think why this may be taught in our sniper school. It is very demoralising to the enemy if his medic is shot , particularly while treating other wounded. If you read combat history, the combat medic at platoon and company level , is given no chance at all. He will usually be shot at.
The only "medics" I believe that the enemy may consider not shooting at , are those working at the BCS or medical battalion level. Probably because at this level, there could be enemy soldiers also taken there to be treated.
Even so, during WW 2, the Japs also attacked military hospitals and killed doctors and also civilians.
