,any way who need brand new subs just upgrade them n there r as gd as new no pt buying state-of-e art subs with gd diving dept when tat not much water 2 dive like .........

actually sometime I feel it makes more sense to buy off the shelve than upgrade.
see, when you upgrade nobody knows what you upgraded it with unlike when you buy but everything has it's limits, maybe on a beetle VW you can rip out the back seats and expand the fuel tank or maybe add better suspension to it put in an expensive nakamichi sound system to it to make it more modern but you cannot make an old VW beetle run as fast as a ferrari, it's just not possible because physically it's so small, you try to put a bigger engine in it may not fit or may not move because it will be heavier or is not the right balance so you get performance issues.... so you can only work within what you already have and not more.
Even an old sub like the sjoorman you can only upgrade within it's limits and only to what you want provided if you also have the technology and your own people who know how to do this upgrading. If you don't have either then you just wishful thinking and you got nuts.
buying on the other hand, anybody can go to the shipbuilder website and view the product specs and know roughly what you got. But it means you don't have to worry abt developing capability yourself, you buying it with money. Developing capability will take years of R&D and may cost more than buying off the shelf and you not achieve it in the end also.
so there's good and bad tradeoffs. Personally I prefer if we just buy it. -
old VW beetle needed an upgrade? sure, take out the old n put in the new VW engine.
dun u know that our msian neighbors have already been doing that to their cars? look at the 'upgraded' protons...run faster than a mercs E class...
as for ships, esp. for subs, i think we needed something that is smaller. we've to think abt manpower and the depth of the sea bed etc...power pack wise, it can always be purchased with something else...something newer perhaps. -

Jokes aside .. sure you can make an old beetle to perform like the newer beetle in speed but it proves my point that you can only upgrade to what it is limited option available. You cannot put in a ferrari engine that will make it fly. If you need a car with speed like a ferrari and only have beetle then you either have to be pratical in your expectations or just pay money get what you want.

New VW engine is abt 1.5 times or 2 times bigger then old VW engine. There is now space in old VW for it unless you remove the back seats.Old rickety VW's body might shake itself apart with that new engine.

like i said earlier, it might be due to the specs, manpower and so on that RSN is not buying new subs off the shelf. newer subs costs more, manpower may not be as gd (numbers wise...cannot be too big else no one to station there) etc. typically cars n ships have some differences. esp. in terms of military. -

It not like im saying upgraded stuff r aways better then brand new 1 but if an old system + upgrade cost only 1/2 e new 1 but has 3/4 it capability why not ofcos there r some system tat nomatter how u upgrade also cant make it 1 then dun waste time n money la

old simmons matress $500 shop owner says he bought from police auction previously seized from a raid at illegal china kuay liao in geylang and you see some old white stains and think it may have been due to "frequent" use by many ppl and wonder if it may be infected with body mites but you not sure
shop owner agrees to throw in the "upgrade" at no extra charge for you by putting a new cushioning to solve the stain and mite problem but spring will not change.

Unless there a design tat relvolutionise e hull design a sub with upgraded sensor n wpns isnt tat far behind from brand new 1 of cos there limit but as long they within our requirement(which we dun know for sure) ok wat.

I am puzzled at the lack of an official acknowledgement by Mindef of this done deal. The source provided by the threadstarter states that they got the news from Janes. However when i did i search on Janes website there is no such article. I understand that Janes usually have information way before the official announcement by the authorities but i don't understand why they are taking so long to announce this. Can anyone explain this?

I am having the feeling that the source of this info may not be reliable. Like i mentioned before in my previous post, if this news is indeed taken from Janes as mentioned at the Chinese source then why is it that none of this can be found on Janes website?
Further more the buying of a local product by the SAF will be a good marketing opportunity by the STK but its odd that they never mention anything about this in the local press or in the defence-related media. We are not talking about some sensitive technology here, the Terrex have been around for some time and displayed frequently at international defence shows.
