CSAR-Combat Search and Rescue

  I am aware that the RSAF uses Super Pumas for SAR missions but what about CSAR? There is a Super Puma with 2 0.5"HMG mounted, one on each side of the fuselage, which is being developed by STA. Does RSAF have a similar helicopter in its inventory which is being used for CSAR? Thanks.

  RSAF does operate such a helo.Seen it at the SAFTI MI Open House.Really cool set-up i must say. Though perhaps a Minigun and CIS40 setup would be even more cool.Ha

  CIS40AGL may prove problem cos 2 aviod e 40AGL blast e copter have 2 fly higher.Higher=more enemy fire

  I am not sure what you are refering to. Are you saying that the 40mm round may hit the helicopter itself or refering to the backblast during firing? As far as i know i don't think there is any backblast and i don't see how flying higher can avoid being hit by the round itself or the 'backblast'. Please enlighten me. Thanks

  I understand now,thanks. I got a silly question to ask, AGL rounds got tracer? I personally don't think so but not so sure. I think since it will explode so no need for tracer to see where its heading unlike MG.

  As a former air force reservist, in a particular unit, I must state some facts:-
  
  1) the SP with the 0.5 HMGs is not so much for CSAR but more for suppression fire during airmobile ( heliborne) ops. Also, to minimise friendly fire accidents, not all SPs in a formation will be so armed.
  
  2) CSAR can be conducted with any type of asset in the army and air force and even the navy. But as you can see from various TV documentaries , you can have a "package" of say , 2 Apaches with a Chinook, to do a CSAR mission.

  Well, feel that with an AGL onboard the helo, it will provide more firepower for suppression of bunkers gunships like Apaches,Cobras are not available.

  Not likely that the planning teams will locate a LZ for large scale airmobile operations that are suspected to have bunkers surrounding it. It is a tactical scenario that will never be contemplated.
